I've been after a character who's a sad dork and sort of a jerk, but at the same time, they also have the capacity to be kind or they at least have a soft spot or two. Or they could be an uptight, socially awkward nerd who's also kind of a prick sometimes. Preferably a guy.

I have a couple ideas for characters I could play, but I really don't know if they'd do well in DWRP games.

Any shoujo isekai that's not villainess. I don't mind villainess (they usually have different plot beats & tropes), but I have an hankering for the older style of "MC in another world, get appreciated more for her own traits/interests/hobbies due to being in another world". MC working her way up from bottom or close to it.

Some recent-ish series I enjoy are Saint's Magic is Omnipotent (MC is videogame logic Saint but her own personality & actions got her good reputation) and Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi (MC does have hidden spiritual power, but her personality & cooking skills shines more).

There's probably series I forgot, so I don't mind revisiting them.

'Ascendance of a Bookworm' is the first one that comes to mind (well, second, but you already mentioned 'Saint's Magic is Omnipotent').

It's an oldie, but 'Vision of Escaflowne' is fantastic and is one of the earliest examples of a shoujo isekai.

Thanks for all the recs! Including Kyo Kara Maoh (man it's been legit years since I watched that via... video rentals...), so I'll watch/read them. Twelve Kingdoms do seem like something I'd dig into.

I would like some complicated fantasy of the book or manga or comic variety. Anything I can read and not have to watch. Complicated meaning intense court intrigue or detailed magical systems I can really sink my teeth into. Recommend me your most dense options, I want to be occupied for a long time.

Anything written by Guy Gavriel Kay, but if I had to recommend a specific one, I really loved and enjoyed The Lions of Al-Rassan. It's a beautiful historical fantasy, will give you complex court intrigue and intense character dynamics.

the malazan series. it's incredibly dense, complex, satisfying, heartbreaking, lore rich and rewarding.
