I'm knee-deep in YA fiction right now. Reading the last book of The Maze Runner series and about a quarter of the way into the second book of the Shatter Me series. The Maze Runner seems to be a case of good ideas with shoddy execution. The world building always seems a little vague, characters and their motivations seem to get retconned whenever the author gets a better idea, but the ending was better than I was expecting, and the first prequel had a great twist at the end.

Shatter Me I'm currently on the fence about. The main character makes a lot more sense if she's interpreted as being literally crazy rather than just skittish and traumatized. Her boyfriend is bland Generic Rebel Guy Protagonist #23, much like Gale from The Hunger Games. I much prefer her other contender for love interest if only because he's an interesting bad guy. I do like the strikeouts in the text, since it makes it a bit more interesting to read.

I'm almost caught up with Bob's Burgers, so naturally, I'm rewatching from the beginning. I haven't done that with a canon in quite a long time, so I obviously highly recommend the show. It's an animated sitcom, but unlike some of its contemporaries, they don't go with vulgar/political/pop culture-based humor. Also, the main family has a great dynamic, especially the three siblings, and Bob and Linda aren't the typical "ugly slob bumbling dad married to attractive, long-suffering wife" combination. They're good parents and have a loving relationship.

Hyper Light Drifter! It's an absolutely GORGEOUS game, it's so atmospheric, and even though I'm super terrible at the gameplay (I keep accidentally drifting off cliffs......), it's really fun and interesting! It has such an amazingly lush world that's shown through pictures, not words, and I just want to run around and enjoy all it has to offer.

Russia. Lots of stuff about Russia. Basic info and history + foreign affairs. Help me RPanons are there any fun/interesting/informative websites that I should be reading?

I will probably be useless, but this site has the biographies of batshit crazy monarchs, among them those of Russia, counting Ivan the Terrible and three others. I hope it helps, even if a little.

titan souls! i'm enjoying the obvious shadow of the colossus influence, not far enough yet to know if the game holds up later though. it's free with ps+ though so definitely worth a download if you have that going.

also sloooowly finishing off gravity rush remastered before i pick up the sequel. i'd definitely rec this tbh; fantastic artstyle (i mean seriously) + endearing protagonist + original gameplay = a win in my book. hopefully the second one is good too!

Catching up on some rereadings I've been meaning to do! Currently halfway through Noli me Tángere (the original version) and it's going surprisingly well. Along with this, I'm reading Ladlad 2: An Anthology of Philippine Gay Writing.

Noli me Tángere is generally considered a masterpieces here in the Philippines and reading it in the original tongue is just beautiful. Noli me Tángere follows a cast of characters living in, mostly Filipinos, who faced injustice and cruelty during times when the Philippines was colonised by Spain. Specifically it follows the story of Crisóstomo Ibarra, a young man who returns to the Philippines since he was studying in Europe for the last seven years. Due to actions from his father in the past and his own actions later on, he begins to faces great challenges that come in the form of the corrupt Spanish Catholic church and government leaders who begin to oppose and attempt to ruin him.

(To give a bit of a background to this book: Rizal wrote this book in an attempt to expose the corruption and abuse that ran rampant in the Philippines, done by Spanish officials and the hypocrisy of the people running the Church. He was not a big fan of them as you'll tell in this book.)

The author, Dr. Jose Rizal, has a way with words that I think can only be understood in the language he first wrote it in, Spanish. But! The translations of Noli over the years are pretty good. For people who want to read it true to form but in English, I recommend the translation by María Soledad Lacson-Locsin. It does make the book a bit difficult to get into at first but stick with it and within a chapter or two you'll be hooked.

Ladlad 2 is also something I would recommend for people looking for more literature in the LGBTQ+ category and also want to know more about communities outside of what they know from their country. As stated by the title, this is a collection of stories, poems, and essays by authors in the Philippines or who are Filipino who are gay. The subject of the works can range from a man attempting to deny his feelings for another man and what happens after to the honeymoon night of a couple making love to one another. The stories range from sweet to sorrowful and are all worth a read at least once.

The way some material is handled and written can be a bit jarring but it perhaps it'll give you an understanding of the community here is like: Bolder in words, softer in actions, thoughtful yet crass that can come as shocking. It was such an important book for me to read when I was still learning about my own sexuality back then so this has a special place in my heart. BUT! Since I know that isn't very useful without recommendations, here are some off the English works I personally loved the most:

Essays:
A postcard from Palawan
Pua Iyam
Wanted: Womb
My sister's dolls
Gayspeak in the Nineties

Poems:
Silhouette
The cost of living
Queen
Oath
Conch
Orbit
Room
Jupiter

Stories:
The husband
Saturday Night

Sorry about all those words! I really wrote an essay here. I do hope people like the sound of the books I'm trying to describe and take a moment to look into at least one of them!

zelda by nancy milford, which is a biography of zelda fitzgerald and the way her life shortly went to shit after marrying f. scott fitzgerald! 100% recommended to people who like to say to themselves, self, i just don't hate f. scott fitzgerald yet. gimme some reasons to pray that they invent necromancy so's i can dig him up and scream at him for a solid hour.

(don't get me wrong, it's exceedingly well-researched and a lot more sympathetic to hemingway, say, than most fitzgeraldists tend to be. but whoever reviews books at the nyt and decided to herald this as "a complex love story" needs a swift boot to the ass.)

Trying to play FFXV. It is not going well. I do like the four main characters, so there's that, and the combat is fun once you get the hang of it, but the lack of plot explanation and the unholy amount of monster spawn in the wilds has been really frustrating for me. Overall, not sure I would recommend. It's far from being a terrible game, but the plot part is kind of a dealbreaker for me.

just finished 'The Vampyre' by John Polidori. all I'm saying is that there's a reason Polidori's not remembered while his contemporaries (Byron, the Shelleys, Keats) are.

I also watched the film 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' last night b/c I'm apparently in a vampire mood and it is terrible and wonderful and everybody is either hamming it up or trying their hardest and I love it. featuring costumes that must have been designed in a fever dream and poor Keanu Reeves trying his hardest to act.

Ahhh was that your first time seeing BSD? If you like hideously OTT vampire flicks with weird costumes and egregious scenery chewing, you NEED to watch Van Helsing.

I'm reading No god but God: The origins, evolution, and future of Islam by Reza Aslan, which is a history of Islam and its many shifting philosophies in their various cultural contexts, from its founding to very very modern times. Obviously, it's a giant topic, way bigger than this brief history can hit, but as someone with almost no background knowledge about the religion, it's awesome - super clear and easy to read, explains exactly what I need explained, and is interested primarily in showing what the world looked like where/when the Prophet founded the faith, and how it's changed, as all religions have changed.

I think my favorite thing about it, as a piece of writing, is that the author is both a scholar of religious history, and himself a believer. It's neither arguing that Islam is the One True Faith Of All Time, or even trying to posit that any one thread of philosophy in it is undeniably true. It's a book about how people contextualize their changing world over time; it's saying, hey, you don't have to be a fundamentalist to believe that God made people to seek the infinite and almighty within whatever cultural framework they've got, and it's good and important to understand that cultural framework.

If you've read Karen Armstrong's stuff on religion, it's kind of in that vein! (And Aslan is also a huge fan of hers, so.)

I'm reading The Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart. Two villainous oafs murdering, thieving, and discussing theology (badly) in 14th century Europe, what's not to like? Don't recommend for anyone that likes horses. Horses do not fare well.

Just caught up with Brooklyn 99. If you haven't watched it yet and need a laugh, give it a shot.

Playing: alternately bashing my head against Bloodborne and a survival mode run of FO4. I don't know why I'm doing this to myself. Please join me in my pain.

I'm watching Steven Universe with my boyfriend. We're in the middle of season 3 right now and just watched the episode "Mr. Greg." It made me cry ;~; Probably the best episode we've watched so far.

Also, I can definitely see how and why this show would have a horrible fan base. It's got all the checkmarks. Thankfully there's a legitimately good show underneath all the fandom wank, at least.

currently reading through the mahou shoujo ikusei keikaku light novels! i'm on arc 5 out of the current 6 volumes that are out and i'm loving every second of it! my girlfriend and i are hooked. started out watching the anime and decided to delve into the light novels and i'm so glad i did.

i would definitely recommend checking them out since they're severely underrated imo. each arc has such a colorful and entertaining cast of characters with fun plots. i've seen some pass it off as a madoka ripoff since they're both "dark magical girl" genre but i swear there's so much more to it! the world building is incredible the further you go on.

I've been hopelessly addicted to Battle Brothers, a game about managing a roaming band of mercenaries in a low-fantasy setting with strategy RPG combat. It's fairly difficult on the easiest setting and merciless as you go up from there; laugh, scream and cry as some fisherman you hired to hold a sword turns out to be surprisingly talented, makes it five levels, and then dies horribly because you took a risk and ended up fighting orcs when you should have just shat your pants and run!

It's "expensive" by Steam standards, and doubtless not everyone's thing, but it scratches all kinds of years-old itches for me.

Shocking no one I'm knee-deep in Emerald City, which is basically my character's canon but with a budget and devoid of any sort of whimsy. But it is gorgeous and has so many references to the Baum books that it is a giving me endless life. I'd recommend it if you're not overdosed on gritty reimaginings of children's stories.

And I'm playing Stardew Valley, which is fantastic and chill.
