Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I'm reading No god but God: The origins, evolution, and future of Islam by Reza Aslan, which is a history of Islam and its many shifting philosophies in their various cultural contexts, from its founding to very very modern times. Obviously, it's a giant topic, way bigger than this brief history can hit, but as someone with almost no background knowledge about the religion, it's awesome - super clear and easy to read, explains exactly what I need explained, and is interested primarily in showing what the world looked like where/when the Prophet founded the faith, and how it's changed, as all religions have changed.

I think my favorite thing about it, as a piece of writing, is that the author is both a scholar of religious history, and himself a believer. It's neither arguing that Islam is the One True Faith Of All Time, or even trying to posit that any one thread of philosophy in it is undeniably true. It's a book about how people contextualize their changing world over time; it's saying, hey, you don't have to be a fundamentalist to believe that God made people to seek the infinite and almighty within whatever cultural framework they've got, and it's good and important to understand that cultural framework.

If you've read Karen Armstrong's stuff on religion, it's kind of in that vein! (And Aslan is also a huge fan of hers, so.)
