currently reading through the mahou shoujo ikusei keikaku light novels! i'm on arc 5 out of the current 6 volumes that are out and i'm loving every second of it! my girlfriend and i are hooked. started out watching the anime and decided to delve into the light novels and i'm so glad i did.

i would definitely recommend checking them out since they're severely underrated imo. each arc has such a colorful and entertaining cast of characters with fun plots. i've seen some pass it off as a madoka ripoff since they're both "dark magical girl" genre but i swear there's so much more to it! the world building is incredible the further you go on.

i watched the show and found it disappointing, are the novels better done or is it just more of the same?

the novels are definitely better done! the first arc (the one that was adapted into the show) is probably the weakest in the series, and even then, the anime left out some important characterization concerning certain characters and left the ending confusing and weird. the second arc, restart, is set in another "death game" sort of style, but the third arc is where things really pick up and deviate from the original setup. like i said, there's some great world building as the series progresses, plus the survivors of the first arc go through some really good character development! way more likable now than before.

i'd say if you're curious, try giving it a go. if you end up getting into it, you can probably blow through all the novels pretty quickly. there's lots of fun side stories expanding on lesser characters too.

are there translations for the novels? I've been meaning to pick them up since I watched the show but I honestly don't know where to start looking in the first place.

the novels are currently fully translated up to the fifth arc, ACES! the sixth and most recent arc, QUEENS, is ongoing in translation but is being worked on pretty quickly so there's not much wait time between chapters. there's also translations for other stuff, like extra material stories and whatnot. hope you enjoy!
