This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

does anyone else get really irritated by characters who have masses upon masses of uncredited fanart icons but basically nothing from the actual source material

Depends on the canon. If it's an old video game where the graphics are poor and outside of that they will have maybe one or two pieces of official art, nope I won't. If it's something where they have plenty of good quality source material, then yeah.

only when the character has easy to icon source material and the fanart isn't of non canon things (masses of porny fanart for a non-porn canon is fine)

always credit fanart, someone put hours of their life into it and they deserve the recognition

what gets my goat is most of my fanart icons come from tumblr. every year or so I check to make sure my credits are up-to-date, but if an artist changes their URL or deletes their blog... welp. I did my best, I guess.

I personally have a list of credits for every piece of fanart I use for icons in case someone asks about them, but I don't post them on the actual icon page just because I don't think anyone actually bothers looking there. but given this thread, who knows.

Pretty sure everyone agrees on the fact that fanart users who refuse to credit are jerks. And nobody can tell if you're refusing to credit or just not putting it up "because you don't think anyone checks". They do. I do. Put the credit where it belongs.

nah. the artists names are in my credit listing and I'm not rehosting their images. my icons don't steal from their page views or revenue in any meaningful way. people look at icons for expressions to inform their tags, not to browse fanart.

i'm pretty sure they mean linking and crediting the art by putting their name on your icon page. not actually linking the fanart piece itself.

as long as they have credit for it somewhere on their journal, it doesn't really matter. we usually put it on the icon page, yes, but there's no reason why they can't do it their own way, as long as it's actually credited for. don't be so fucking afraid of change, anon. or having to actually do more than click on the icon page. why give so much of a shit how someone else does something?

I'm kind of ashamed that I have a bunch of old icons I can't find the artists for.

I play a lot of video game characters and often the official art/using game screen caps looks like SHIT. Or even if it isn't, it's not at all a suitable range of expression that I need. Lately I've been caring more about how the consistency of my icons look rather than if they're from ~official sources~ or not. That and the character might be described as some very serious grizzled old guy but the official art/game screens makes them look like a cross-eyed anime twink or something. Which is dumb.

I try to credit where I can on the icon descriptions. some really old icons I made years ago before I started putting where I found them in the filename will just be lost to the ages. I feel bad about it, since I'm also an artist. if I don't know I just put "unknown" or "pm with source" or something. I wouldn't mind if someone wanted to use my art as an icon for dwrp, so long as they don't claim they drew it... or edit it to the point it's completely unrecognizable. (you may want to consider using another source image if it needs to be edited that much.) if it's an eye/hair color change or cleaning up sketch lines or taking out speech bubbles or something i don't care. i do that once in a while as needed.
