it's just going to be nice having new people in the game after so many drops and having it back to regular time again. i know this is a cliche thing to say, "OMG EVERYONE" but i'm so happy to have this game back on regular time and get new folks in.

i'm kind of hoping there's a way to rebuild fire's claim in the game, either through an npc or maybe a pc. i think i'm just not used to people putting in a concerted effort to actually do something in the game and failing because of what, a dice roll? or missing something that was too hidden for anyone to figure out they needed to do? really not looking forward to losing out on the rest of the game because people either can't get a break with rng or aren't geniuses.

gonna be honest here, i'm really not fond of the tabletop-like "people can randomly get royally fucked because of bad RNG/failed objectives that were never made public and they just have to deal with it" thing that seems to be going on here more and more.

that kind of thing works in a lot of tabletop games because they're all about the stats and the adventure and the challenge, often way more than the character development (although i know some tabletop rpers like to focus on characters). hell, your character can be killed without your permission if they mess up in a tabletop game.

in a writing and character focused hobby, that style of play just...doesn't really work. it screws up characters and plans and a lot of people commenting to that post just seem understandably disappointed. one group of characters was essentially perma-nerfed in a war game because bad luck, and might have to rearrange plans and their character's arc because of it. i love the amount of mod involvement here and i love that characters can have real rank and power and impact, but this sudden negative consequences for apparently preventable reasons that were never disclosed stuff has gotta stop or everyone's just going to be stuck flying by the seat of their pants with no idea of when their character might be screwed over by failed RNG roll #9.

So is this game going to be grimdark doom-and-gloom combat-focused struggling from here until endgame?

I've wanted to app here for a while, but I won't bother if that's the case, especially because my character isn't a fighter type (the political/influence system was what caught my interest in the first place).

Question about apps, anons!

For the skeletal basics, would a character that has a well-defined personality and interactions with other characters but not really an arc or a solid backstory fall short of the linear timeline requirement? My character's canon takes place over the span of a few days and they're a major (but not THE main) character, so I'm worried that they won't meet the requirements even though they're not a minor character by any stretch of the imagination.

The wording on the app rubric makes it sound like only really minor no-name characters will fall short of the requirements (and I know you guys have had trouble with them in the past) but it seems like that's mostly from the perspective of longer canons? A character might be a major character in canons like movies with ensemble casts or single books but not have a ton of timeline to babble about. I guess the closes in-game analogy would be a character like Ariadne.

i'm new to dwrp and i just wanted to make sure i got this right:

- reserves open the 20th at midnight GMT
- if you got a reserve, you can't put in your application any earlier than the 24th at midnight GMT
- on the 25th, reserves that haven't been followed up with an application expire, and anyone can apply for any character
- on june 1st, if app slots haven't already filled up, apps close and nobody can apply until the next round

Anons, is it still worth apping into this game as a politically ambitious character or have enough current characters attained power that the political landscape isn't going to have many opportunities for new characters to advance?

I'd love to get my character really active and involved, but I'm worried that their efforts aren't going to amount to much simply because there aren't enough positions of power to go around. Especially since current characters have at least a year's head start ICly.
