Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. gonna be honest here, i'm really not fond of the tabletop-like "people can randomly get royally fucked because of bad RNG/failed objectives that were never made public and they just have to deal with it" thing that seems to be going on here more and more.

that kind of thing works in a lot of tabletop games because they're all about the stats and the adventure and the challenge, often way more than the character development (although i know some tabletop rpers like to focus on characters). hell, your character can be killed without your permission if they mess up in a tabletop game.

in a writing and character focused hobby, that style of play just...doesn't really work. it screws up characters and plans and a lot of people commenting to that post just seem understandably disappointed. one group of characters was essentially perma-nerfed in a war game because bad luck, and might have to rearrange plans and their character's arc because of it. i love the amount of mod involvement here and i love that characters can have real rank and power and impact, but this sudden negative consequences for apparently preventable reasons that were never disclosed stuff has gotta stop or everyone's just going to be stuck flying by the seat of their pants with no idea of when their character might be screwed over by failed RNG roll #9.

the whole negative consequences thing is pretty much the name of the game at this point. 'have you not stopped the void yet? the sea is now gone, lose all water magic'.

the game has ICly by Snow's own admittance, a year or two left, tops, and in the OOC post, it says that more and more stuff will be lost as things go on. this is the glimmerings of endgame shit.

dunno about you but my money's on a lot of people all lining up to try and get shards for mama morla because that's the only way anyone icly knows how to stop the void unless i've totally missed something

Alyosha's trying to heist the collected shards from both the courts and complete the gem with them (I've seen it mentioned a few times, most recently on her thread w/ Javik on the Leathann log), but who knows if that'll work.

so much for the fantasy based sandbox the game was originally designed as

don't get me wrong I love all the plot, but snow is being way more heavily all or nothing than she needs to be

Tabletop elements don't work in DWRP because we don't have stats that we can present to influence the rolls. A tabeltop game has elements of randomness to it, but its offset by players knowing their own stats and being able to make calculated risks based off that.

There's none of that here. We either get lucky or we don't.

i don't really like it, either, sometimes.

i've been apart of metaplots, but it's frustrating. i've had to retcon things numerous times and it's basically painting my character in a corner and i cannot do a whole lot with it. i would absolutely love if, at all, in some fashion that we get a head's up when we set up to plot things that this is going to fail, rather than depend on RNG with certain plots.

like, i get it, i get the idea that this is a war-themed game, but there's only so much i want to do and thread out before it becomes more and more restrictive and then it becomes much more difficult for it to do anything. all i want is a bit more transparency and clarification for things.

it's a little discouraging half of the timeskip plans i've made can be blown up by a roll by RNG, so i feel you, anon :/

soooo...has anyone talked about toning down the tabletop elements with the mods?

I agree with all of this but just bringing up detailed reasons here is not going to do anything.

the problem is going to be that our main plot mod, snow, is from forums/tabletop games and has no actual real experience outside of their time in each with journal style rping. bringing it up to her might not be enough when she has no alternate experience to offer.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-16 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
guys, we have more than one mod, and snow even said herself because she's new to dwrp, and that at least one of the anon mods has been helping her out a great deal. they might be able to work some things between them or someone else could suggest some things

i think if someone is willing to leave some feedback, that could help, but nobody ever does. i brought up different concerns with her/them and that's worked out, but nothing can get done if people don't discuss it through the right channels
