Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.
Discussion of or soliciting RP for celebrities or other non-fictionalized versions of real people is not allowed.

I feel this strongly. The game I'm in right now is turtle slow and the most fun I've been having is with the 10% of people who can tag back at least two or three times a week at minimum. The other 90% who tag very slowly or the flakes and squatters who don't do it at all are less of a priority for me.

I'm only human and if someone is only tagging back once a week that means our threads are only progressing four replies each on either side over the course of a full MONTH. And it's worse when some of those replies are the equivalent of [blinks] or [farts] If someone replies to me even less than that or gets down to one reply a month like some of these flakes do, my enthusiasm is gone because how the HELL am I supposed to expect our CR to grow when you're giving me twelve fucking replies a YEAR?!

i feel like if you can't hit your threads back at least three times a week (assuming the person you're tagging is tagging you back promptly), you're just too slow to be in a game. it's no fun to have cr that takes months on end to get anywhere significant because it's moving at such a glacial pace or to be still threading out stuff from the last month's event when the new event goes up.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2025-04-23 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
it's just straight up rude to the other people in the game. you're holding up their fun because you can't be fucked to fulfill your end of the social hobby in a timely fashion.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2025-04-24 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
literally someone in my game keeps reaching out TO ME for threads and going super slow or dropping them before we get to the good part. yet I see them boomranging castmates. it's so fucked.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2025-04-24 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
you probably already have done this but i've set my foot down on this sort of behavior to great results. "sorry i'd like to finish the threads i already have. it's hard to wrap my head about where our characters are at otherwise," seems to work wonders

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2025-04-24 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
going to try this, it just sucks putting in effort and time and to be treated like that you know?

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2025-04-24 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
this is weird but tbh asking for threads is not an experience i've had on either end. don't people usually have catchalls or tls in event posts? just tag someone if you want a thread. they will just not tag you back if they don't agree.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2025-04-24 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
How dare they not think about other people's fun when they're dealing with their life and the hellscape of the world. Damn fun dispensers not doing their job.

And all of my tags are done and caught up in three games. This isn't about being someone that's slow, it's about not giving a fuck and finding others to tag.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2025-04-24 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This depends. If you're in a cast or there's a cast/player cap, then your actions do impact the people around you in the game. If you have CR, your CR has to work around you. New people joining the game will be put off if they join and most of the game is inactive which makes it harder to grow. Mods have a harder time running events and keeping things straight if they have to plan for people who will play each event for 4+ months. It's not wanting people to be 'fun dispensers' to say, 'This is impacting other people and should be considered when you decide if you want to be in a game.' Games are social spaces with a higher commitment - memes and PSLs exist for people who can't dedicate the time. It's like signing up for a bowling league versus doing drop in bowling. If you sign up for a league and never come to any of the games, yeah, people are going to be kind of POed because that spot could have gone to someone who could show up. It's entitled behavior to decide that you have the right to be in a game no matter the impact on other people because your life is hard.

People need to stop thinking 'You shouldn't be in a game if you don't have time to play in it.' is a personal attack. They also need to stop guilt tripping/shaming when people who are in an RP space want to RP. Which is what statements like 'we all have jobs' or 'they're dealing with their life and the hellscape of the world' are - insinuating that people who have time to RP don't have lives to deal with or the hellscape doesn't bother them and insinuates that any pushback is an attack on people in tough circumstances rather than asking people to be honest about their capacity.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2025-04-24 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
which doesn't mean you get to pretend your (in)activity doesn't impact anyone else

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2025-04-24 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
yes but you should have a sense of responsibility when your behavior affects others whether it's paid or free. we live in a society

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2025-04-24 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah and it's collaborative, with other people on the other side of your screen

if you're this pressed at the thought of exercising basic courtesy towards other people in this hobby, it's time to find another hobby that doesn't involve interacting with other people. or, accept that people are going to consider you kind of an asshole when you screw them over without communication, and feel less inclined to play with you in the future

+100 to all of this. when you sign up for a structured social activity that expects a certain level of commitment (which a game is), then you agree to the accepted participation expectations for that activity. if you join a tabletop campaign but only show up for one or two weekly sessions a month, don't be surprised if the dms write your character out. if you join a static in ffxiv and then show up at least half an hour late to every raid, you're going to find yourself replaced. you don't get to leave everyone else hanging just because you don't feel like participating in the group activity that you signed up for in the first place and then expect them not to be mad at you for it.

Imagine the number of tags or people you could have tagged out in the time it took to write this. Stop holding up your game and go rp.

everyone's dealing with their lives and the hellscape of the world, you ain't special

if you need to take things easy for your mental health that's no crime but that also means you shouldn't sign up for things that are going to require more dedication and activity than you're willing to put out

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2025-04-25 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
it takes less time and effort to just not maintain effort in a game you can't contribute to and aren't getting anything out of to begin with. if you don't have the time and energy for a game, you can drop or you can not app. you don't need to be in a game.

if you are making the conscious effort to dedicate just enough time to pretend you're in the game without being in the game, thus making the experience worse for everybody whose time you're wasting and anybody whose character you're squatting on? that's a decision, that's on you

Re: RP WOES

(Anonymous) 2025-04-24 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
depends on the game. the games that are advertised as slow paced laid back, this is probably fine because everyone is doing that.

Re: RP WOES

(Anonymous) 2025-04-24 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
2-3 tags a week IS slow, though. that means a thread is going to hit at most 6 comments in a week when you add in the tags from the other player. that's not enough to really get anywhere in the thread.

(frozen comment) Re: RP WOES

(Anonymous) 2025-04-24 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Between full time jobs and mismatched time zones sometimes that's the best that can be done, nonnie. You learn to cut to the heart of the thread quickly.

and honestly I'm overjoyed if I find someone that tags a thread once a day. Three tags a week is common when so many people are in three games and devote Friday to TFLN.

(frozen comment) Re: RP WOES

(Anonymous) 2025-04-24 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
genuine question, why do people keep acting like full time jobs have anything to do with it? all of the people i know who do 100+ tags a month have full time jobs and the vast majority of them can't/don't tag during work hours.

ime it's the people who don't have full time jobs who are the biggest flakes and i'm honestly fascinated by this because they don't even have the excuse of working full time.

(Anonymous) 2025-04-24 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
people who have full time jobs often manage their time well. they usually dedicate a specific time in the day to rp which means consistent tagging due to habit and momentum

unemployed flakes get caught in the trap that is “i can rp whenever, i have the whole day!” so they fuck around all day then whoops it’s bedtime with nothing done. rinse and repeat

(frozen comment) Re: RP WOES

(Anonymous) 2025-04-24 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think it would depend on what kind and how long the hours of the job is. Some people definitely find it hard to tag after work and can only manage on weekends due to being tired, and some are able to schedule it daily and keep up momentum well. I'v seen full time jobs affect people's pace in different ways, some because they use rp to feel more energized and others finding it too much for their tired brains.

That said it's a factor for some but not for all. From my observation a lot of it comes down to energy levels, time management, and number of other hobbies/distractions. Also mental health.
