Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.
Discussion of or soliciting RP for celebrities or other non-fictionalized versions of real people is not allowed.

it's a stupid writing hobby that we all do for free in our free time, anon

which doesn't mean you get to pretend your (in)activity doesn't impact anyone else

yes but you should have a sense of responsibility when your behavior affects others whether it's paid or free. we live in a society

yeah and it's collaborative, with other people on the other side of your screen

if you're this pressed at the thought of exercising basic courtesy towards other people in this hobby, it's time to find another hobby that doesn't involve interacting with other people. or, accept that people are going to consider you kind of an asshole when you screw them over without communication, and feel less inclined to play with you in the future

if you keep making plans in your free time and fail to follow through, you're the ass

doesn't matter if it's writing, going to the movies, or going out to eat or any other activity

yes and most of us would like to actually do the stupid writing hobby, not spend our time sitting around waiting on other people to their half of the stupid writing hobby

i love how dwrpers think this is the only collaborative social hobby in the universe that's also 'just a hobby'

plenty of social hobbies require a higher time commitment than game rp. they require set schedules, and if you can't make that time commitment, they expect you not to participate. the idea that everybody else in the group should suffer just because one person can't make the schedule never even occurs to them.

the idea that everybody else in the game is morally obligated to suck it up and play around your character squatting because you refuse to contribute more than a single thread at the end of every month that you drag to exactly five comments and drop is ridiculous. that's why we have ac in the first place.

gdi post comment button

anyway from my experience most people in fact work around a missing person in their hobbies

they also just never invite them back after they flake enough times

haha yeah it's this

ime the flakes aren't doing this. they're gushing and making plans, starting new things, then moving those threads along at a glacial pace. Only to make even more plans and gush more and boomerang those while the players they made previous plans with are sitting and waiting. Then they start dropping threads left and right or wanting to handwave, then make more plans again, lather rinse repeat. Had this happen with like 4+ different people.

yeah it's really weird to me how people act like game rp is some huge high-commitment hobby. i participate in three other non-dwrp social group hobbies and of those + dwrp, dwrp is far and away the one that requires the least amount of commitment. the others all expect me to show up at a specific place at a specific time and then spend a set duration participating in the hobby.

with dwrp i can do it whenever and wherever i want, and there's no obligation for me to be doing it for a certain amount of time straight if i don't feel like it.

Because it's a small amount of effort per tag, it's easy to get into a boom and bust cycle, where you have a day with more time, tell yourself you're really going to commit to rp this time! and then the rest of your rl demands happen and you fall off on keeping up with your tags because oh it's only a little, you'll catch up tomorrow, and oh it's been a week and a half again and your inbox is overfull. The small commitment per tag makes people underestimate how much cumulative and consistent time the hobby can take up, especially because events, posts, and other people's tagbacks don't always happen in a way that's convenient for your schedule.

Re: +1

ime that problem is 99% the result of people refusing to accept that they can't play every blorbo in every game. they would be able to keep up just fine if they weren't trying to play five characters across three games, but they refuse to be realistic about how many characters/games they actually have the time and energy to stay on top of and so they're always swamped because they're just plain trying to do too much.

after much trial and testing, over a decade of rping, i've discovered my limit is two characters. if i really want to be active, get into a game, build meaty cr? two characters. no more no less.

i feel like many rpers never learn their limits because they lack self-awareness. but surely if i app my blorbo into this fourth game i'll get my drive back? surely if i make a bunch of plans i'll get back on the horse this time?

probably not. 90% of the time people should be looking into subtracting, or adding to their plate.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2025-04-27 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt and exactly, my limit is two characters too, doesn't matter whether it's in a single game or two different games. i just can't be active enough or have deep cr with any more than that. sure, i could probably pass ac with three or four characters, but there's worlds of difference between just passing ac and actually being involved in a game.

i'd much rather have fewer characters and have them have a solid network of cr and be involved in the game's plot than have a bunch of characters who just sort of exist in their games but never really do anything of note because i simply don't have time for it.

+1 i back out of playing with people once i know they actively play 46.5 characters across several games, memes, and psls. it's a waste to invest time in them.

Re: +1

+1 god this so much. if i dropped dming i could comfortably do two, but if i want a good quality of rp life it's one char, one game right now.

i had to break it off with a long time rp partner of mine because they couldn't resist new shinies. broke my heart. but after several cycles of [great rp > hype goes to their head > ramps up to five game characters > rp quality goes to shit > "no one wants to tag me anymore :<" > drops back to one character and rp quality is great again] i just can't do that

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2025-04-27 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
it's so frustrating. these people talk about how looking at their inbox is stressing them out and it's just like "yeah, that's because you're playing six characters, that's your own fault."
