Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.
Discussion of or soliciting RP for celebrities or other non-fictionalized versions of real people is not allowed.

DWRP is a panfandom space, assume everyone is open to crosscanon.

I prefer leaping in and seeing what happens but on riskier assumed CR or scenarios, I ask first.

after a lot of discussions on here about memes, I'm kind of surprised that's the take. if it's so expected why is it so common to have to put "open to crosscanon" in prefs these days? genuinely, is it like a long-term vs newer players assumption or what

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

i put it bc i'm tired of being asked about it. nothing kills momentum more than talking about something more than writing about it

this is a panfandom place so people wanting only canonmates are the outlier BUT being unambiguous even when it shouldn't be necessary doesn't hurt which is why i do it

can I ask why? personally i like to just know what i'm supposed to write so that I don't write something you hate. I understand when people get too in depth, but I don't understand why "are you ok with crosscanon?" and "Cool, X setting work?" before giving a starter is a turn-off.

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

There is a limited amount of that which is tolerable, and that amount varies by person.

For my own part, I'd rather get something put forward in a starter that I can yes-and rather than negotiating the perfect scenario up front. The in-character writing is the good part, so let's get to that.

I can def see where going too in depth on the Perfect Starter would lead to less actual rp! thanks for answering

personally if i'm on a meme because i want to tag. if you're not giving me a tag, i don't care. i don't want to have a conversation, even a short one, when we could just be tagging.

in my experience rpers who bombard me with "is it ok to give you [x character]" also tend to be the kind of rpers who need their hand held over other things. i prefer to tag with people who are willing to take a risk and be creative. it's just a chemistry thing. if you come to me asking me to confirm if i want your tags, we're probably not going to get along in our writing styles either.

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2025-04-08 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry that's been your experience! Usually I literally just want to know if the starter I have in mind is acceptable, so I clarify on crosscanon ok/setting ok first. If that's too much for you still I guess we wouldn't have chemistry and I respect that, but thanks for answering and giving me a bit of a perspective on it

my experience up until this point has been

you: do you want an x?
me: yes!
you: great do you want prompt 2 or 3?
me: either is great
you: okay if we go with 2 then do you want it to take place on a sunny day or a rainy day
me: ...sunny
you: should they be getting lunch?
me: idc
you: dinner could be better do you want them to get dinner
me: pls

and so on until i write the starter for you and you usually drop the thread in 2 tags, or i stop responding to your questions because this isn't going anywhere and you're not writing a tag

the longest was something like 5 questions, them asking me to start, and them dropping it in 3 tags

this might not be you, but this has happened to me often enough that the longer you drag things out the more i assume you're following this pattern, and i react accordingly by dropping the thread

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2025-04-08 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I can both confidently say that ain't me and that it also sounds very frustrating!

it's also my own rule of thumb that if I'm asking questions, I'm writing the starter. not sure why they ask you questions if theyre not going to start the thread

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2025-04-08 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
that's the thing, anon. i don't know you so the second you hit 2x questions i'm going to assume that you're THAT person because you haven't given me anything that shows me otherwise, and that has happened to me one too many times for me to want to give strangers the benefit of the doubt anymore.

im different from the other anons in that i don't mind a quick check-in comment to clear up a question or two, make sure i don't have a preference between prompt 2 or 5 because you're torn and are tempted to flip a coin. so the turnoff for me would come from the fact that you're unnecessarily dragging it out, since you could just as easily slam it into one comment. "hey ive got an x, and we could do sexy corpse disposal or maybe go with vampires, lmk which you prefer or if you've got a different idea"

since if im signing off on your idea im signing off on crosscanon, and i could just as easily love crosscanon and love the basic setting but also hate your starter.

again, though, im just one anon, average out everyone's feedback and figure out what works for you.

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2025-04-08 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
oh I dont need to prove it to you or anything; I know I'm not that person because I write the starters. I have only had one person drop a thread where I asked about preferences prior to writing my starter, so I was simply curious about your perspective since it isnt something I have run into.

I couldnt discern from the previous anon comments if 1-2 check in qs was the same as asking "too many" so you've all clarified as much wrt that. But offering options between my own ideas could assure potential partners that I do plan to have a starter ready for them when they answer, so I'll probably start making that more evident as per your suggestion

personally, I'm asking questions because I'm planning on writing the starter and want to know if there's anything that the person I'm tagging would like me to keep in mind/include for them. or if the scenario I rolled will work for them (because they haven't listed any preferences but the list contains some prompts that are coommon 'no's).

but I've seen examples that ayrt gave you in the wild and they're truly baffling... especially when they end with the question asker going "could you write the starter? :) "

what the hell???

usually if i'm asking questions it's because i have a couple of scenarios in mind and would like to know which one they prefer, or it's a crosscanon thread where i'm auing my character into their world and i want to see if the idea i have for how my character and theirs know each other jives with them.

i'm planning on writing the starter, i just want to be sure i have the green light.

in my experience, people who's initial question is along the lines of "do you want an x? i was looking at prompts 2 or 3, do you have any preferences?" are just doing a vibe-check and/or just looking for high-level initial input from me, and are chill and fine.

the "do you want an x?" people want to play (or feel like they want to play) and have figured out that tagging out gets them more actual play, but don't want to start. i've started shortcutting all the questions by saying effectively, "yes, and i'm looking at prompts 2 or 3, do you have any preferences? i'm happy to start." vast majority of the time, one of two things happen: either a) this is the point i get ghosted, which is fine, because that means the time i've wasted has been minimal, or b) they have no preference, and would love for me to start, at which point i just start.

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2025-04-08 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt, +1 agreed on all your points, at this point i ignore the 'do you want an x?' people entirely but besides that im on the same page as you

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2025-04-08 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt but I guess I didn't think about people tagging in expecting YOU to do the starter. If I tag into someone I assume they expect the starter to come from me so i just kind of forgot people do that

if you do have to ask questions please for the love of god ask them all at once. there is no reason to ask 5 questions spread over as many comments because as everyone else has mentioned, I have never had good experiences with people who do that. they're fishing for me to start, drop the thread in two comments, or are allergic to creativity. or all the above.

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2025-04-08 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
unless you're planning on writing a starter where our characters are rawdogging, asking me questions about everything when i'm already indicating that i am up for rp on a crosscanon community and have posted to a specific meme with specific prompts is unnecessary. just write it! you aren't going to ask someone if it's ok every time your character does something, right? it's the same thing.

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2025-04-08 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not talking about people with clear preferences and specific prompts listed tho (and many memes do include common nos as another anon suggested) I dont have to ask those pepple questions because they have the answers already available.

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2025-04-08 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
if someone hasn't listed clear preferences or specific prompts, it's safe to assume they're up for all of the prompts.

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2025-04-08 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
has anyone actually ever said "no" though? unless you're writing a saw-style horror prompt for a cute shipping meme 90% of your ideas are probably fine.

yeah, the bigger issue is less 'do you do crosscanon' and more 'do you prefer assumed cr or do we want to build something as we go'
