rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

for most of my rp career I've played characters who don't have any wider pop culture relevance so I've never dealt with this before, but now playing a character from a long-running and well known franchise (think your Star Trek/Star Wars/literally anything that gets referenced or parodied in other media frequently) I've realized that people will just use this to infomod and 4th wall my character openly and it's kind of amazing

like here's an example similar to something that's happened to me; for the sake of the example say I'm playing Obi-wan. I have him introduce himself as Ben and not say anything about Jedi because he's trying to keep his identity on the downlow while adjusting to this new world and not knowing who all may be here who know the name Obi-wan. and then another character just knows his name and that he's a Jedi anyway on their first meeting because their character's canon has a "help me Obi-wan you're my only hope" joke at some point.

I didn't bother reporting it or saying anything to player about it because it didn't feel worth making a fuss about at the time and they dropped out the game anyway but I'd never been so blatantly infomodded before and I was kind of stunned. and since then it just keeps happening in big and small ways. it's irritating.

played a lot of pop culture icons myself, but it definitely feels like the casual infomodding from players has really grown these past few years. make sure to specify no 4thwalling on your prefs/ooc plot info, and nip it in the bud oocly when it happens.

it’s in my prefs but you’re probably right that I’m going to have to be more proactive about telling people not to do it upfront. I said this in the other comment but I think some people think what they’re doing is fine as long as they aren’t outright calling my character fictional.

shit like this is why I only app to games that forbid 4th walling and every time a character is apped into the game their canon is magically obliterated from the memories of everyone else

my game actually does have that in the rules specifically but people just don’t seem to care. my prefs also say no 4th-walling. I think people think that if they aren’t coming up to your character and saying something like “aren’t you Velma from the cartoon with the talking dog?” then it’s not actually 4th-walling

if it's in the rules, report it to the mods. these players aren't just being stupid, they're actively breaking the rules of the game and making it difficult for you to play. that's not cool.

It’s worth bringing up, espeicially if it’s actively bothering you. Other players might feel similarly too.

where are you playing because i've missed the casual, common fourth-walling since it was common in the ljrp era and nowadays everyone treats it as infomodding and either has "no fourth-walling!!" on their info post or the game bans it outright

why would you ask the anon who is having a problem being casually infomodded where it's happening so you can join in
