f-list users, how do you find rp? is advertising in chatrooms all there is? and do you have any tips for making a good ad if that's the case (or even if it isn't)? i'm not having any luck with my canon characters and minimal luck with my specific kink ocs (and i honestly think THAT'S more about the fact that my kink art is pretty popular, and that's what i use for their profiles).

can't speak for the chat side of f-list but groups work surprisingly well depending on your kinks and fandoms (although they can look rather dead on the surface).

if chat advertisements and group posts don't get you bites then something else might be amiss and it's usually either related to your profile or simply bad luck when it comes to the characters you picked.

1) you might want to reevaluate if your profile is filled out in a way that actually attracts the crowd you're fishing for. and be prepared that some preferences scare off a portion of potential partners (which can be a good thing to weed out what you don't want, but be tough when you don't realize this). having good custom kinks is also a big deal, for example. without diving into an essay here i'd for now recommend the all time top posts on /r/flist that have a lot of red flags, green flags, and general profile tips discussions. or feel free to drop a sock if you're comfy with chatting more about it

2) sometimes it's also plain bad luck. the site is already over-saturated with certain gender/position/main kinks combos and those will just naturally get fewer interest. generic male characters need to do a lot more reaching out in general, for example. playing canon characters is also notoriously hard (especially if you have even a modicum of standards). and as always: people are fickle!

So like, maybe this is controversial, but I have to ask because I saw it happen slowly and I still don't understand. How did we go over time from "fourth walling is common and expected as a tool for comedy and CR-building" to "fourth walling is cringe and basically powergaming" to "fourth walling *can* happen but is more often used for horror and requires an opt-out post and a CW in the subject line for metafiction?"

For that matter, what do you think about fourth-walling? Do you have fond memories of it but think it belongs in the past, like the way it's used now, or wonder why it was ever popular?

I'm okay with my character being fourth-walled if I'm an LCW and the player doing so doesn't hit my character with the whole "you're fake fake fake not real and I know all of your deep secrets/emotional trauma and I'm putting you on blast haha". The characters that I've played who've been fourth-walled like this tend to be known in their universe and also know about the multiverse concept so it was weird, but not mind-breaking.

With one of my guys it was actually good for him, because he sometimes felt very alone in the setting, so he ended up making close friends with the fourth-waller (who also curbed the meta commentary and acted normal).

On the flip side, there was a fourth-walling character in a recent game that liked to unload details about the fictional characters they knew all over the network, which seemed really tasteless. While they got permission to know these characters, it seemed like they were really making a mile out of that inch, for comedy and as a way to make themselves important. It meant the fourth-walled characters couldn't get to know others organically, because Snappy Stu already told everyone.

So yeah, don't do that.

how do i enjoy talking about a shared fandom/threads with people without them thinking that we're close friends?

there's no way to describe oneself this way without sounding narcissistic but w/e, it's anon and this is what i've been told. i'm generally very energetic, enthusiastic, warm, open, funny. that kind of person. irl i've been told i'm charismatic. but the flipside is that honestly with some people i just want to be able to plot new stuff/coordinate threads/talk about our threads, and keep conversation to rp, without them seeing me as a super close friend within literally a week or less of talking to them.

i repeatedly have this issue where i try to keep conversation just to shared stuff we're doing because i love plotting and tend to be more of a planner as opposed to someone who shoots from the hip/wings it in threads, but in doing so even though i'm not really gushing about my personal life or anything people will decide that we're like... best buddies, or will describe us as friends within days of meeting me, and not in the casual way like 'oh, i have a friend who plays x', like... legit description as friends, when i still very much feel like we're strangers and barely know them. i establish rapport with strangers really easily and i feel like a lot of times people take that as "we've known each other forever".

i don't want to reshape my personality to be cold to people or rude and dismissive. i'm just naturally very chatty and open, and even when i was in customer service people would just unsolicited tell me all kinds of crazy details about their lives in ways that they didn't with my coworkers; generally i'm the same level of friendly with my coworkers as i am with people here. how do i gently maintain boundaries without being like "no actually we aren't friends, we just met", etc with people who i enjoy rp with/think are decent, but don't really want any deeper attachment to?

hoping people will give genuine advice here and not like, project or call me a terrible person or something. i just don't know how to balance being my authentic self with maintaining casual relationships with hobby partners, and i don't want people to feel too close in case down the road my whole reason for talking to them - our shared activity we're coordinating - ceases to be. thank you guys for any insight.

You can't control how people feel, and some people feel rapport much more easily than others. I'm similar to you in that I really am very friendly at work and online, but I don't really feel like I am friends with them just because I talk to them.

The best way I find to do this is simply be honest about your boundaries from the start. Saying things like "Is it all right if we just stick to RP/Fandom things? I don't really like discussing RL stuff." has worked for me. People who are okay with it will be chill about just talking about plotting and RP, and people who aren't will usually just not approach first.

how do you feel about putting the same character someone else has already posted on a game tdm? i used to think that was fine, since not all tdm attempts work out and a top level isn't a reserve, but quite a few of my friends are saying it's bad form. where do you land on this?

you're not going to get everyone to agree on this. the only thing you can do is whatever you're comfortable with. if you do it, you'll have to accept that some people will think you're an asshole but others might not care.
