we're all cringe here

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I never minded it much since few people did it well even back in the day, so it was easy just to brush off. But I remember the otaku OC someone further up was talking about and good god they were OBNOXIOUS. I wasn't even in the game they were in and had people telling me about how they were ruining plots and setting back characterization for people, like telling Bucky from MCU they knew everything that had happened and would happen to him, which made the character paranoid as fuck and want to avoid everyone else for fear of it happening again.

In my own personal sphere, I play from Star Wars, and considering it's one of the most referenced canons in pop culture I set down strict rules from the start: yes, you can know the basic details of my character (hey, you're that neat guy from the movie!) but I don't want a wookieepedia-style infodump unless it's specifically shown in your character's canon that they're an obsessive nerd about Star Wars, especially since even IRL no one watches every TV show or reads every comic or book written about the character.

I also play a based-on-a-historical-figure version of a character from a TV show and in that case, I allow a certain amount of fourth-walling, the same way someone might go about telling Cleopatra they knew she was an Egyptian queen without telling her she was from a movie played by Elizabeth Taylor. Usually in that case it's more of a "I'm famous in the future? Sweet!" type of reaction.

I also play a Star Wars character, but one of the lesser known ones. I totally don't mind someone knowing about the universe and commenting about the Empire and Jedi and the Well-Known Characters (though I'd be mindful of players of said characters if they were in my game), but I draw the line at "your character has not read the total of two novels this character shows up in, sorry". It feels fair to me and lets people have some fun about the idea of fourthwalling in general.

And I'm in agreement with you about historical figure characters. Yes, you know about Catharine di Medici, but you don't know the specifics of her storyline in Reign or The Serpent Queen or the 1956 film about Diane de Poitiers.
