This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. looking for people who might be interested in being a part of, assisting in the making of, or in helping run an open au game. the setting would be a city, name negotiable, in the '40's or a time similar, home to the maison des lettres, a french crime syndicate. it would center on crime, mafia involvement, police, fame, and people just trying to live their lives in spite of it all.

I haven't rped in years, and yet I'm spending an inordinate amount of time contemplating how I could build a game based on Fear and Hunger.

Like at the moment I'm thinking something like Termina's death game would be the most suited to journal rp, run it on the three day structure of the source material, but time loops.

Since how many characters are going to start killing people on the word of a random moon clown telling them to? Sure some might, some are down to kill even without that but not all of them. And how many want their characters experiencing an instant irreversible failure if they aren't blood thirsty or particularly strong?

Throw in people wouldn't want to sit around doing nothing if their character is murdered day one.

So, de-power everyone to make the footing slightly better, let every single character that dies have the ability to return as a monster version of their character for the remainder of that time loop, then for every three characters a PC kills: make them do a coin flip to decide if they remain a person or become a monster so people can't just try to have their character 'win' outright.

End of three days, if there's more than one person standing or that person who is still a person doesn't go to the tower, all living people get to experience being twisted into a monster just before the loop resets.

If at any point someone actually successfully becomes the last person standing and gets to the tower, maybe they don't get reset on the time loop. (Everyone else is revived/healed/de-monsterised, maybe a 'winner' if one happens can stay in game as a sulfur cultist but they're all still subject to the time loop) or maybe the winner can reset with memories of ending up a sulfur cultist so there's clues that simply doing what the moon clown says won't end the time loop, idk.

It's all something that really needs more work shopping than just pasting fear and hunger 2 into journal rp.

Though I'm contemplating perhaps rather than an app, it might be worth while just having players state that they understand what this game is, what their characters may be subjected to, and maybe that their character is suited to the game.

I honestly think people have more fun electing how they personally want to twist their character into a silent hill like monster rather than pushing it on them. Maybe dice roll on volunteers if anyone wants to pocket cat.

You want to be a shambling dick monster? have at it. You want to be a sewer frog demanding people suck on your balls? I got no reason to stop you.

That said if you decide to have an orgy you're probably becoming a ball of meat.

One of the reasons I've held off is that I don't know how to best handle the undeniable history of rampant -isms in that era. I don't want people to have to play out segregation, but I do want the red scare to play a role, and I'm afraid of wank to the tune of "oh so discrimination against x group is ok but not y group" and i don't know if there's really a good answer to this quandry

would it work to make it an au 60's that has all the aesthetic but none of the baggage? the -isms just aren't a thing in this world and everyone is treated pretty equally. instead of the literal red scare, everyone is afraid of pod people or the moon empire or something made up instead of commies. you can milk paranoia, distrust, witch-hunting and rat on your neighbors backstabbing out of just about any scenario if you tweak it just right.

I was in Mayfield back in the day, and the one -ism that was more in the forefront was sexism. women & men couldn't hold specific jobs (no male nurses, no female doctors), that kind of thing. positions of power were held by NPCs (mayor, chief of police, business owners) and PCs couldn't take those positions, only work for them, but PCs could quietly run their own things on the sly for other PCs.

while forced families in a hetero arrangement was baked into the setting, gay characters weren't specifically targeted– if your character regardless of orientation spent the night with someone else, they would wake up in the morning in their assigned home. too often & they would be "droned", aka their personalities forced into that of a happy resident of the setting. there was a lot of psychological torment to milk out of that, again regardless of a character's background.

I am pretty sure period racism wasn't part of the setting, and any player insisting on it would have been seen as a shithead. If you don't want segregation in the game, then...don't set it in a location where segregation occurred in the States. Simple as that. Do your research.

My point here is that if you set up the framework, inform players about the content, add a suitability section to your app, and for god's sake don't write plots revolving around NPCs flipping out about the homos or black people, you should be all right.

honestly i've wanted to mod something like this for a few years but my fear is that once i started it my desire for this would suddenly vanish and i'd not be mod material, and it's like, the only way you know for sure is by trying it but i'd let a lot of people down if i failed. not sure how to deal with that.

re: sexism, that would for sure be in the setting at the very least in the household dynamic. otherwise to me it's not set in the 60s so much as it just has 60s themed decor if that makes sense - while i understand that some people probably wouldn't want to engage with it, it'd be a private game for sure and assuming they'd be invite-eligible to begin with they'd be free to just kind of make their own game if they weren't into that. i would also want to for sure include the red scare/the ecological crises of the 60s. to me personally, speaking as a woman who has been on the receiving end of sexism, it's part of the horror of the 60s setting, as is the commiephobia and "is our water even safe to drink" angle and hypercapitalism. a super creepy stepford wives vibe is also high on the list - i'm thinking sort of uncanny, surrealist horror, less about monsters and more 'something isn't right here, who can we trust, where is the line between fake and real'.

Survival Horror with Body Horror elements

A different thread made me think of what a game based on Darkwood (https://store.steampowered.com/app/274520/Darkwood/) would look like. For the uninitiated, Darkwood is a horror game where you're trying to escape woods that have grown so thick that it's seemingly impossible to get out, and the people who are trapped inside are changing and mutating in strange ways. (Long story short, the air is making people ill, and the illness is accelerated when people eat mushrooms that basically turn them into living and often violent mushroom people.)

Off the top of my head, I think that a good way to approach a game like that would be to make it a limited run jamjar that sequentially reveals more pieces of the map according to player actions. I'd say there could be two weeks of supply gathering, base building, crafting, etc., and then two weeks of 'nightfall', which is when people need to bunker down in their bases while monsters besiege them.

The trick is making sure that the atmosphere of horror is maintained without making the players feel like the plot is happening to them rather than with them. I'm thinking to make that happen, all powers should be nerfed, and players should have the option to eat the poison mushrooms for power boosts with the understanding that it'll accelerate the body horror illness and make their characters incrementally more vulnerable to future illness-related plots. I'd need to think of a way to keep the players from just handwaving killing a bunch of monsters and moving on--maybe the players have to tell the mods how they intend to defend the fort, and then the mods can roll a dice on injuries or something?

What do you guys think?

darkwood's such a neat game


i think this has potential to be a cool litte game. one way to handle it, too, is to make siege events with supply gathering and exploration being the predominant activity outside the event. maybe do monthly announcements listing what sections of the woods are available, what mushrooms, suppies, etc? as an ex-mod, that'd be how i'd probably divide the siege and survival/basebuilding aspects and translate the concepts into an intuitive framework folks who aren't canon familiar can easily grasp

i'd also recommend having an npc or two as a head of base to keep to characters on track and keep things from going too SoL. and maybe consider giving charactes assigned jobs that they're working on as past of the basebuilding/survival tasks

this is just initial thoughts, i might have more ideas later if you like these

This is probably a pipe dream that would die of wank in a heartbeat but I'd love to see one happen. Just go all in on the tropes, maybe throw in a couple more exotic xenogenders for spice, just fully unashamed eat-your-heart-out omegaverse nonsense.
