Expiation, Folkmore, Metaheroes, Fade Rift, Myddvai and Abraxas are all medium paced but active and have low AC requirements that generally everyone surpasses. Abraxas is a faction game so is more limiting in interaction in some ways but can work out just about anything. Fade Rift and Myddvai are more broader plot/campaign focused, the others more event driven plus SoL content. I would say all of them are good for character development and meaty CR.

How the hell do you get an actual good storyline out of tagging out on memes. Like I am just dumbfounded by people getting full PSLs and even making OOC friendships from meme tags with strangers--I can rarely even get to a third round of tags unless it's someone I already know, and I have been reassured I'm not the reason people drop every thread/it's not something I'm consistently doing that makes me suck. But I have never had anything long-term develop from a meme and it has been years, someone please instruct.

im one of those people, have many crosscanon ships and psls and an entire friend circle i cobbled together out of tagging out on bakerstreet

someone a while back said that you need to have a bit of luck and thats true, but not counting that, the leading causes of this not happening for me have been a lack of consistency/thread dropping, ideas or first threads that dont really do a whole lot for me, general lack of exciting plotting, and sour ooc vibes

i can elaborate but generally you just need to be clearly approachable and fun, and a willingness to get creative with threads and bend prompts to get unique and memorable threads back. which sounds like a given when i say it like that but really thats all there is to it most of the time.

here are my tips, from someone who's made ooc friends + lots of psls from memes alone:

- if you're the one tagging out and you want to play out a cool storyline, you gotta come up with one and pitch it to people. EX.[ ooc: what do you think of the two of them teaming up to fight a dragon and getting their asses kicked? ] if they don't respond or drop the thread three tags in, pitch it to more people. if you get 9 flakes/uninterested players and 1 long awesome thread, that's a win.

think about the kind of stuff that gets you really hooked on a thread, and form the plot around that. do you want to play out a bunch of h/c? tender one sided pining? conflicting feelings of rivalry and attraction? make that the core of what you're pitching and ppl who are interested in the same emotional hooks will engage with you.

- think about the ways characters might be compatible and build a thread idea from that. it could be... similar jobs, similar backstory, they're both from a fantasy world, they both jumped out of a spaceship at some point, shared nihilistic POV etc. OR, think about the ways they aren't compatible and how that might make for some fun and engaging threading. whenever i tag out to a new journal with the hope of kicking off a more complicated thread, i already have some sense of how our characters might engage with each other.

- think really flexibly when it comes to AUs and character traits. a lot of my best long form memes + psls are AUs where i stuck my character into another character's universe and it resulted in getting to play out cool canon-related things i'd never written before.

- this is just me but i almost always only tag out to people who have some character info on their journal, even if it's a character i'm pretty canon familiar with.

i've only had a few meme threads with strangers turn into long PSLs and friendships, but i think the thing that made the difference was that they went beyond just "not sucking". i've done plenty of threads with strangers that were perfectly fine and they were decently fun threads until i just lost interest without the other person necessarily doing anything wrong.

the number one thing that made the good ones worth sticking around for is that they were proactive. not even about tagging out first or suggesting a scene idea, but proactive in the thread itself. scenes of two characters just standing in a void talking and doing nothing else get boring after a while, and it's exhausting to be the only one that actually adds anything new to a thread while the other person just reacts. the best threadmates i've had do things to bring some life to the thread – their character physically does something during the interaction, they have the characters start moving to another location, they introduce some outside element like an NPC or monster attack or sudden rainstorm or whatever, etc. i'll always drop regular talking threads eventually, even with perfectly decent players, but i'll tag someone until the end of time if they're a proactive rper.

I don’t usually either! Sometimes, you hit it off if characters are surprisingly compatible. Tagging unpopular canon folks and ESPECIALLY folks playing OCs helps, they’re usually eager to play with anyone!
My funny, friendly, laidback muse seems to be getting tons of attention, despite the somewhat obscure canon, just because he makes folks laugh, I guess?
People like funny! Play to your strengths.

People who put some sort of hook or idea in their top level tend to be more consistent, in my experience. They actively want to play and aren't musedropping to be cool.

Learn to tell the difference between people who are only there for very specific interactions usually with castmates, and people who are adaptable and like to ad lib. Ad libbing is, in my opinion, the single most important writing skill in writing.

If I’m interested in a character I throw a mild curveball at them and if they take it in stride, I know I can work with them.

depends on who you play and, as some anons have said, a degree of luck. i prefer to keep an eye out for people who tag back and work on some ideas to have on hand. i also try to tag people back even if they take a while to respond. a few of the better psls i've had have come out of people who started off very very slow and if i had turned my nose up at their initial pace, i'd have missed some great stuff. a lot of people who only play on memes do so because they aren't able to tag all the time.

ooc communication can be hit and miss. i like to wait on it because some people find it annoying, and some people will end up only talking ooc and never getting around to tagging. some quick comments to establish a scene are imo better than sending more detailed private messages, at least at first.

for every great thread you get you will get two dozen that fizzle out or never start. just the way it is.

let's say you are tagging a character's inbox but their dw layout is unbearable to the eyes. how do you make it to where it's your style? i know it has something to do with html?= something but i can't remember the rest. thank you in advance!

Do people ever app into games being transparent about wanting to stick around for no more than 6 months (for example)? Ending it with a death or something of the sort. Is this a thing? If not, would this be looked down upon?

I feel like my tags are dragging (multiple conversations going on in tags, a lack of concrete detail, and too much introspection), so I am looking for ways to improve my tags and possibly my writing in general. Tips and suggestions would be appreciated!

Newbie question: If a toplevel comment on a meme doesn't say OTA, but also doesn't have any restrictions, does that mean it too is ota? Like, is that the default?

do you warn for spoilers in your tags?

i'm playing a character from a 10+ year old canon with a canon point at the end of the story, where some significant events have happened. it's only recently occurred to me that talking about these events might spoil someone who is interested in the canon. i'm trying to decide if i should warn for it in future or if most people just expect to be lightly spoiled about some things if they're rping with people from unknown canons?

What’s the general feeling behind apping a character to a game after someone else dropped them? Is it different if the character was barely played vs if they had a lot of CR? Is it considered poor etiquette to app for a recently dropped character?

hi! I've been lurking around here, trying to decide whether or not to try and look for rps here but all my other means have essentially dried out soooo... here I am.
I would just like some advice on how to navigate myself around. I don't really have the time for games at the moment and while I learn how things work, I'm only interested in psls. where would I find them? do you think it would be worth mentioning that I'm new to this medium and might need a chance to warm up? idk why I'm even nervous. :( but I would appreciate any help!
