hmmmm it could be the same nebulous mechanic that fuck or die games use with some kind of "energy" that's generated through significant ties and relationships

perhaps players can submit threads of particularly significant moments (characters confessing secrets to one another, sharing quality time, just a nice thread) and then earn rewards or secrets or something

what about an rpg-style mechanic where you level up relationships, that could be cool but might take a bit of modding, like if you submit a significant moment you level up the relationship and higher levels equal more privileges or power or some shit

so your char has idk a level 6 relationship with brian blorbo, that's nice and documentable for game purposes, and now they can stand on their head, or get extra biscuits with dinner or smth

haha this sounds fun but i think itd be a bad idea to have mods regulate what counted as significant enough to level up. itd be a lot of work to manage because youd have to read so many threads. it might work for a small game of like 25 players though

better to make the levels increase after a flat number of threads (more for network posts, fewer for log posts. slap on a minimum length like 10 comments for first and 5 comments for the second), maybe an evolution system

tbh i feel like if this is more than just spitballing the best thing for the interested parties to do is to sock up and discuss in realtime

if its just talking for fun its ok to stay here cause sometimes hypotheticals are fun, if its serious then itll help to re-establish what anons want out of the game, what its focus should be on, and then go into mechanics. im okay with watching the movie mentioned above and throwing out ideas or helping with mechanics but i wouldnt be able to help with modding

I just don't think any "mechanic" involving AC and what threads you have is either interesting or unique. Every game involves rewarding players with positive or negative outcomes/social standing in the setting for their efforts in threads. All that "idea" is involves making the mods the middle man and mostly puts a lot of work on the mods that even in a small game is going to cause either burn out or drama.

You can't even test how the idea works on the TDM because the genre and setting can be anything and the prompts can be shit because the only idea is "look at these AC rewards".

Isn't this what Nightfell did anyway and the mods shut it down because there was so much drama over the subjective way AC was handled? AC rewards are not a mechanic.

i'd agree it's negative nancying, if we didn't see people up in arms and crying favorites or preferential treatment whenever there are no clear rules or regulation (hell, wasn't this the entire basis of why people complained when nightfell mods tried to apply AC? because they felt subjective requirements wouldn't cut it, and things needed to be explicit?)

the mechanic is actually really cute, but you'd have to have mods laying out some general rubrics about what qualifies for leveling up. i think that's doable, personally.

in small/private games, sure. but there are reasons that big games keep defaulting to the same general set of mechanics, and that's because of the amount of modwork involved.

i've got an idea for a game with what i think is an "interesting" mechanic, but due to the amount of work it would take on my end to make the mechanic happen, if i ever make the game i would be limiting it to no more than a dozen players for my own sanity.

in general i think it would help if mods could automate some of the mod processes, like with a tool that sends a comment with an automated message. i know we have ac savior for ac but i also think mods have streamlined ac submission anyway by having static ac posts. ive also seen players put together thread trackers for themselves that count the amount of comments in a thread which you could in theory use as a mod too

overall i think like... a lot of the tools that could be used to help mods havent been made because most of us are used to doing things the way we have been for the last decade, most of us are comfortable using dw and dont wanna go off dw, most of us dont know enough about programming or coding or spreadsheets to even begin to know how to make what wed need

aside from it being a lot of work, my other thought was that people might not like someone else dictating what counts as significant to their character or cr, especially if theyre canonblind or havent followed every thread. its a valid criticism tbh but i think most people would be chill about it if the levels dont have much meaning

overall yeah just set a goal and let people do their thing. if you dont want people to hit 10 in a month then set a monthly cap on how much xp you can get/how many levels you can get, maybe have a shop or something where people can exchange prizes and have one of them be "exceed max cap for this month" or something so if someone REALLY wants it, there you go

roulette system for prizes could be fun too but its a lot of work

i liked the idea an anon had upthread somewhere about ac bonuses getting little extra things for generating more cr so sometimes it could be a bad or annoying thing but it gives them things to do in the game (depending on how much work mods want to put into it)

like maybe your cr submits a thread of two characters baking cookies together. their bonus could be a little golem made out of cookie dough that follows them around for a week. weird shit like that.

ive seen this system before in short term games and its a lot of work even for 20 characters. if it were a game of like 50-100 it would be a nightmare

youd also have to be familiar with the threads (and being familiar with every players thread isnt really realistic) and you might have some people claim favoritism if they believe one person gets a better bonus than them

was in a short term game like this that was only about 20 characters and even then it was a lot of work for the mods because they had to read each and every thread submitted to see what happened in the thread, it's not just like regular ac where all you have to do is count the comments.

it wouldn't work for a larger game unless you had an equally large number of mods.

The 'significant event' part is really what won't work because that is subjective and anything subjective generates mod work, in questions and fussiness over what counts.

Just have it be 'threaded together in the monthly event'. Players can make it as significant as they want.

make it "threaded together" full stop and maybe ask the player to write a sentence or two to explain why it's significant. just do it the exact same way people submit smut ac for bonus points. nobody needs to care if it's "really" significant as long as the player actually does the work of getting the link and justifying it.

maybe add a rule about only being able to submit, e.g. one text thread per month or something to make sure it shows "effort" and it's not just spamming out things for bonuses.

extra points if they're generating family dynamics with multiple people perhaps to make sure it's not just people using the same cr over and over.

just the threaded together full stop is fine, i like the sentence description thing because it helps mods with context for the thread and it also gives an easy reference down the link for what each thread was about

the extra points thing is ok but im kind of eh over the "make sure it's not just people using the same cr over and over"i understand the purpose but i dont think it ever actually deters people from threading with only a handful of people
