That's going to happen in any game, with any players who poke at plot, because there will always be a subset of lazy assholes who want attention but don't want to actually do anything. There's absolutely no way to avoid this, because even in a completely plotless, perkless sandbox, the whiners would be whining that people like playing with the active players more. All you can do is shut it down when it happens where you can see it, and dole out warnings - and bans, if necessary, though I've never had things go that far - if people step over the asshole line.

IME, it's not usually the same 10% who contribute every time, though. There will be a few core players who are pretty much always active and engaged, and then there will be other people who dip in and out on a month-to-month basis. So overall, a higher percentage of people is actively involved, you just set the target percentage low on any given plot component as an anti-frustration feature, both for yourself as a mod and for your players.

Ugh, I've felt that pain. It's rough when you want them to come back, but know that they're just making promises that won't go anywhere. Especially if they're holding a slot that could be played by someone who might actually play.

It's a weird time when 90% of your RP threads are fun, but you have that one player who is just stressful to work around and it's poisoning the well for everything else you're doing

I think what isn't clear is what constitutes "being unenaged" and how you know that as a mod. if your AC includes a summary of what the character is doing, that's one thing, but if you're just doing comment counts, well. idk about you but I have literally never posted all the activity I've been doing, I only post proof that I've made AC. so I think there's reason for a lot of pedantic anons to legitimately have reason to wonder how you're measuring engagement and keeping track of just how active your players are.

I'm sure you can find a viable solution but I think some of the fluttering in this thread is concern about how you prove conclusively that your players aren't "engaging."
