it's always a bummer to read stuff like this. hopefully this isn't a dumb question, but have you tried posting your own ads here on rpa? (i have and gotten mixed results, but some of them have been genuinely great, so i always figure it's worth asking in case people are nervous about the prospect.)

Fwiw nonny, I do my tags in the order of what I can handle at the moment. Even if that means I do less stress on making AC PSL or meme tags, or the quick ones just to get things done for AC first, take an RL break, and then take my own pace with the more in-depth threads to enjoy them more without stressing if that thread is going to make AC that month or not.

Life has been stressful for the past year and a half for all of us, so tag priority seems to be in a different pattern for us all. I think you're possibly reading too much into things.

In that case...

I've been daydreaming of some kind of spirit resort meme (a la Spirited Away/Konohana Kitan/Forest Covered RP/etc). Characters could be AUed as things like visiting spirits, employees, unfortunate humans, with prompts like a veteran worker showing a new kid the ropes, or some poor fool getting locked into a shady contract, a spirit brothel for the obligatory nsfw prompt, some kind of local festival, a guest being a problem customer... things like that.

I suggested something like it in a meme idea thread once and a couple of people seemed interested, I just never figured out how I wanted to set it up, so if it strikes your fancy please take it.

Thinking about it, this really puts into perspective why gacha game fandoms are so prolific. They are content machines, you're basically guaranteed some update every month or even every couple weeks.

Agreed. Unless it's a major shounen jump title or a well known manga/anime, fandom isn't very strong for them. And if the series ends, the fandom is guaranteed to fizzle out sooner than later

How much fan made content of your character do you consume - fanart, fanfic, fanvids, whatever the medium - and how much would you say it plays a part in how you play that character?

I have generally played from stuff that doesn't have a lot of fan made content, so I haven't interacted with fandom in years. Now I'm playing a hugely popular character from a giant fandom, but I haven't touched the AO3 tag because frankly idk where to start.

Part of me wonders if I'm doing myself a disservice by avoiding it, like I'm going to disappoint my canonmates because I am somehow missing the mark on how others write my character.

I play a popular character from a big canon, so there's a metric ton of fanart/fic. I read a lot of fic, but almost none of it has informed how I play my character at all, because tbh most of it isn't very good, and the characterization often contradicts canon.

Is there such a thing as too much plotting and OOC coordination in a game? I'm currently playing in one that has:
- CR meme
- Introduction posts for newly accepted characters
- Event plotting post

And I feel like I'm expected to do more paperwork than playing in the game. I just want to get to the good IC stuff. If I skip out on putting up intros and CR memes and plotting, will people not want to play with me as much? If I only reply on these OOC posts instead of making my own top-level, is that good enough in terms of engagement?

I'm in a game that does the same things and I only post to event plotting and occasionally the intro OOC post when I have time. I don't do the CR memes any more because my comments never got any replies anyway. but I have a big circle of CR and have no problem with new players or getting CR, I'm almost too busy tbh.

I'd say 80% of plotting these days goes on on plurk anyway. if you have a plurk and use it regularly/aren't a dick you won't have an issue. if you don't have a plurk commenting around on the CR meme and other posts becomes more important.

a lot of this is just using common sense, anon.

if your game just has 7 new characters, they will probably notice if you avoid the cr meme, intro post, and event plotting post. if your game has 275 people, they will probably not notice.

if the event post is elaborate and requires a lot of plotting, like it's an au event with dream brain-bleeding as people regain identities, then people will probably care more about whether or not you put up an event post over something lightweight like everyone adopting a kitten.

and if the game is the type of game in which a lot of ooc planning and chatter is expected, then avoiding ooc planning and chatter will probably become a problem the longer you're in the game. if the game is a big 275 player w/e in terms of ooc plotting then people probably won't care.

You're not usually missing anything. Players who get disappointed that you don't fit their head "fanon" of your character tend to be overinvested and you might be better off keeping your distance. Personally just being in a game is enough removal from canon, no one needs to inform their characterization on fan works. It also might put off your castmates who come in expecting a certain baseline of personality from your shared canon only to find something wildly different.

i actually prefer to avoid fanfic and fanvids because i don't want tumblr fanon hot takes to inform my characterization. i justify my characterization decisions with canon (and love i discussing the reasoning behind the choices i make, if asked!)

if my castmates have a problem with that, it's their problem, not mine. i've never had an issue with castmates, however. only with casual viewers who think they know my character better because they've consumed too much fanon.

anon, if op is feeling upset and put out by their rp partner, then they either need to talk to them or drop them.

there may be a valid explanation for all of this, but headcanoning an entire au about how they're reading too much into things isn't the way to go. it's also far more obsessive to feel put out by someone and write a fanfic about how you're actually someone's most favorite partner and they're just prioritizing tags based upon the stars and cosmic energy, than it is to talk to them or drop them or build a bridge and get over it and get other tags that you prioritize over the psl that was pissing you off in the first place.

Sorry to report but this is extremely normal. If you don't want to do the work just don't post to them. If you tag out a lot it's probably fine, though you'll miss out on the opportunities that come with pre-planning.
