Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

because of the rule of headcanon and ocs. an oc is something made up completely by you and you own everything about them. a fandom oc is someone generally based on a canon (like a hp wizard or an unmentioned herald in valdemar) but you have a whole world to base a character on without having to worldbuild. it's easy to take the supernatural world and make a hunter or a monster-type out of it based on everything we've seen in the entirety of that series.

if you're playing a character that's shown up, existed, but doesn't have enough backstory/canon to be appable, that becomes a problem because you're shoving headcanon into a character that can vary incredibly. someone could headcanon that their character has a set of traits that another version of that same character might not have/might have the opposite of. and it's not like 'likes to cook/burns water', but more like how their past was, parents, school, siblings. if you can't get that from canon or if there's not a lot of meat about them in canon that you could feasibly have 10 people app 10 completely separate versions of those characters and yet still all be 'right' because the 2 bits of canon info we got on them is applied... then it's more of an oc than a canon character. and it's a way to insert 'ocs' into canon casts and take up cap slots or just do that weird forced insertion thing that some people do.

no, not everyone, but enough people have done it that the bad ones have ruined it for everyone else and the majority would just rather not bother.

isn't it a double standard then if a fully fleshed out character is apped by player 1, players, establishes cr, drops, then that same character is apped in by player 2 and characters have to deal with "multiple versions of the same character" ?

no, because for them, it's the same character. if there was a nu!trek cast and kirk, bones, spock, uhura, and scotty were all in the cast and uhura and bones dropped and reapped, they'd still be bones and uhura. they'd still have a wide base of who they were to play from and it'd be easy to call out or point out instances of oocness. maybe bones from the newest movie dropped and the new bones is from the first nu!trek movie, but it'd still be the same bones. it'd just be like a brand new cast all apping in under different canon points. same character, but maybe they just left, went home, and were drawn back in again.

that's not the same for a side char that comes in and is that version of that side character and maybe another version apps in a few months later and is a completely different version. it's almost like it's an au in how varied the versions can be.
