Learning to touch up screenshots

That’s probably not the best title, I’m not sure. Anyway, I’m trying to improve my photoshop skills but I’m absolutely awful at taking screenshots from my games (I do save them in png, just to note ahead of time) and get them to look as nice as I see others have.

Could you guys share some general tips and filter suggestions or something? Maybe with before and after pictures? visuals help me a lot sometimes.

can you explain why they need to be touched up? can we see samples of these screenshots?

this is a vague question and we can't really help if we don't know what's wrong.

da. idk if you were wondering how to duplicate the results in the second image but here's my attempt: https://i.ibb.co/sWFJnXc/ff.png

ffxiv screencaps mostly suffer from poor lighting imo so I did a manual color correction on the lightest part of the moogle staff with a slightly lighter grey (#A18B8D to #D1C7C8) which brightens the whole image, then put a dark pink #846262 soft light layer on to to replicate the pink tinge.

A super quick-and-dirty way to get in the ballpark:

Layer 1: Duplicate the original image, set layer to "Screen" at 75% opacity
Layer 2: Hue/Saturation layer, saturation +25. Adjust as desired.

Would something like this work to brighten up nighttime scenes without washing them out?

It should. If your stuff starts feeling washed out, futzing with the saturation or trying to take some of the blue out with a color-balance layer usually helps.
