Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

CW: sexual assault

Hey anons, I’m thinking of playing a character who isn’t the best of people, and I’m not talking about murder or killing hundreds of people. This character sexually assaults someone in his canon, but the canon itself seems to still portray him sympathetically. He isn’t treated like a villain. You see a lot of fans either minimizing this assault or explaining it away as him not being in a good mental place. In other words, they’re apologists.

When writing an app for a character like this, what is the best way to handle it? Do you brush over the assault like the canon/fandom seems to treat it? Or do you incorporate more of your own interpretation of the character to it?

In my opinion this guy is trash, but I enjoy playing villains in general even if the canon’s narrative doesn’t write him as such. Obviously if I’m bringing this character to a game, he’s not going to be jumping anyone (definitely wouldn’t play out that in a game), and if it makes a difference I’m taking him from a canon point prior to him being a scumbag.

i'll be honest, i'm wary of your canon if the narrative doesn't treat sexual assault like a bad thing. on the other hand, i would not recommend hyperfocusing on this aspect of the character if canon doesn't, because that would come across as suspect to me as well.

it's difficult to give you advice without knowing the canon context, but if you're playing him from "before he's a scumbag," i don't know if it makes a difference, anyway. i don't tend to go into things that happen after my character's canon point in their apps.

don't glorify it or make him all about the assault, but don't minimize it, because a lot of an app is how the player sees the character as well as their characterization. acknowledge it, mention that it happened, point out that they'll be coming in pre-that event, but also be very clear you're willing to put up an opt out post (which you should be okay with doing just in case) and that's about it. be clear it's a thing, but don't woobify him. if he did an assault, he did it. the whys behind it don't matter (and a lot of people take any 'why' as apologist behavior, which is sort of is, even if it's fiction because we all have a hard time separating ic/ooc when it comes to things that we might have encountered irl) but your ability to acknowledge it as a thing and to prepare for people who don't want to play with that character are a big consideration.

aside from acknowledging that the assualt was a bad thing no matter what canon says, put an opt out up just in case. Chances are no one will use it, but it's better to have one and it not being used than deal with someone wanking about the fact you don't have one they're not going to use anyway.
