Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

what i don't understand is why "limited canon" characters are apparently a problem but ocs and to a smaller extend fandom ocs are more socially acceptable

i thought we were supposed to be in a creative hobby. discourse on different interpretations of cannon isn't as big of a deal as anyone makes it out to be.

inb4 people try defending this hypocrisy with ONLY THE MOST EXTREME EXAMPLES of that weird 1/100 weird bad castmate that springs up weird bad headcanons. most people who want to play "limited canon" characters aren't doing it to impose their malicious evil headcanons on other players.

like, sure, you might have that ultra rare encounter where someone farts in an elevator and makes you uncomfortable but that doesn't mean turn elevators into a socially unacceptable weird thing

because of the rule of headcanon and ocs. an oc is something made up completely by you and you own everything about them. a fandom oc is someone generally based on a canon (like a hp wizard or an unmentioned herald in valdemar) but you have a whole world to base a character on without having to worldbuild. it's easy to take the supernatural world and make a hunter or a monster-type out of it based on everything we've seen in the entirety of that series.

if you're playing a character that's shown up, existed, but doesn't have enough backstory/canon to be appable, that becomes a problem because you're shoving headcanon into a character that can vary incredibly. someone could headcanon that their character has a set of traits that another version of that same character might not have/might have the opposite of. and it's not like 'likes to cook/burns water', but more like how their past was, parents, school, siblings. if you can't get that from canon or if there's not a lot of meat about them in canon that you could feasibly have 10 people app 10 completely separate versions of those characters and yet still all be 'right' because the 2 bits of canon info we got on them is applied... then it's more of an oc than a canon character. and it's a way to insert 'ocs' into canon casts and take up cap slots or just do that weird forced insertion thing that some people do.

no, not everyone, but enough people have done it that the bad ones have ruined it for everyone else and the majority would just rather not bother.

isn't it a double standard then if a fully fleshed out character is apped by player 1, players, establishes cr, drops, then that same character is apped in by player 2 and characters have to deal with "multiple versions of the same character" ?

Re: QUICK SURVEY!

no, because for them, it's the same character. if there was a nu!trek cast and kirk, bones, spock, uhura, and scotty were all in the cast and uhura and bones dropped and reapped, they'd still be bones and uhura. they'd still have a wide base of who they were to play from and it'd be easy to call out or point out instances of oocness. maybe bones from the newest movie dropped and the new bones is from the first nu!trek movie, but it'd still be the same bones. it'd just be like a brand new cast all apping in under different canon points. same character, but maybe they just left, went home, and were drawn back in again.

that's not the same for a side char that comes in and is that version of that side character and maybe another version apps in a few months later and is a completely different version. it's almost like it's an au in how varied the versions can be.

some of it is people using it to get around "no OCs" rules in games where they're not allowed. i don't have any problem with OCs, but if the mods don't want them in their game and someone's basically making an OC but using the name of a technically canon character with no actual character, they're basically just sidestepping rules. it makes you look like someone who thinks they're above the rules or like you're gonna be a pain in the ass for the mods constantly looking for exceptions or ways for your character to be ~special~

and then some of it is players that could just make an OC and app that, but want to have the "in" with a cast. it's pretty shitty to waste a slot in a canon capped game on an extremely minor character with no substance that no one asked for. these people usually expect to be included in all the cast plotting and drama and treated like a major castmate even if none of the other characters in that cast have ever met their canon OC or have no reason to interact with them beyond "we're from the same world lol". you could easily make an OC that's a witch going to a magic school in your own original world and use that common ground to build CR with harry potter, but these people instead app katie bell with an app that's 95% headcanon and take up a slot in the harry potter cast, blocking actual canon characters from apping if the cast is full and expecting to get included in all harry potter's shenanigans despite harry and katie barely interacting in the books.

so in theory this wouldn't be a problem if the game didn't have cast caps and castmates set boundaries as appropriate and you didn't take it as a personal affront that someone wants to breathe life into a character that canon refuses to for whatever reason

Re: QUICK SURVEY!

(Anonymous) 2019-08-19 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
it depends on the character. one i can think of that gets instant side-eyes are 'canon love interests' that died/left early and people use them to shoehorn into ships or cast involvement. like kristen kringle from gotham or jessica from supernatural. there are a lot of 'canon' characters that have had romantic/familial involvement as a sort of peripheral thing that some people use to force themselves into an important place in a given cast. and because it's a character like jessica that sam would give a shit about and have feelings about, it's hard to just not react or write it off as 'moving on'. these are the bad apples that ruin it for everyone else. these types of people that do that are why mods and most players blanket 'no' on the decision.

you sound simultaneously crazy defensive and super pretentious. no one's personally offended that you want to ~breathe life~ into a character, we just don't want to feel forced to interact with your super special totally canon character just because they happen to be from the same canon.

and fun fact, it isn't a crime that canon "refuses" to give more depth to whatever minor character you've hyperfixated on. not every mentioned character is gonna be important in a work of fiction, and it isn't necessarily good writing to flesh out every random person if it's just distracting from the stuff that actually matters in the story. we don't need tons of details about batman's mom when the only significance said mom has in the story is dying so batman will be motivated to become a superhero.

"it's not MY fault the evil mods have cast caps and potential castmates are jerks who'd rather have actual characters in their casts!! gosh don't be so ~offended~ that i'm improving this obvious failure of the shitty original canon creator, they should have just made this random background character more important!!!"

lmao and you wonder why no one wants to play with canon OCs
