except other people to wankgate. if i go on wankgate and talk shit about someone who doesn't visit the comm, even if my deets are wrong or are old enough to qualify as relics of a bygone era, that might still influence someone else not to play with them.

not everyone goes to wg and some people live in blissful ignorance of the shit that goes down there, but fact stands, enough people go there that it impacts our culture and yes, innocuous people who've developed reputations based on shit said there are impacted by it even if they never go there at all. happens to games, too.

"just don't look" doesn't really work because enough people DO look that it affects us.

that's not saying "well enough people look that i have to look". at all. it's saying that even if you never look at wg, wg will still impact your rp life here because wg impacts dwrp culture as a whole.

you can make yourself stop looking at wg. you can't make everyone else stop looking at it unless you straight up nuke the comm. and so long as there's enough DWRPers looking at it, what's written in that comm will impact DWRP culture.

i’m generally of the “don’t look at wg” mindset but if i hadn’t looked after a long time of not looking i wouldn’t have learned someone i was playing with was stabbing me in the back and running all kinds of insane diabolical schemes.

hopefully my experience was the exception rather than the rule, but it really made me think

my point was more about the fact that wankgate has had an overall impact on dwrp culture in general, that "don't look" might spare you some individual stress in some way, but it's not a guaranteed way to not have wankgate never impact your time here.

ayrt. to be clear, i agree with your main point.

like. yes, i generally do suggest people avoid it most of the time because it sucks you down a maddening rabbit hole, but i don't agree with anons who say it has no impact on anything. we really just can't measure that, and i've seen people on the comm say they'll steer clear of people based on namedrops. so there's that.

i also don't agree with people who seem to think wg is just a manifestation of private views that need a space to be vented and is somehow filtering away toxicity from other spaces. i think that's a bit short-sighted when it clearly creates its own kind of toxicity in the form of some real shitters who have cracked the wg "code" as it were and used it to shit on their enemies and muddy the waters about all kinds of things.

as for the argument that wg is useful for calling out toxic people, i'd argue it actually often makes it harder to do so, since the toxic people can just repurpose the anon environment, and a lot of toxicity occurs in private and isn't the kind of thing you can call out without exposing yourself to the scrutiny of the anon environment. a good recent example of this was the kisha and farrah thread under namedrops. by going public, jesse actually exposed themselves to the fangs of anon, for example. we have no idea whether some of those anons were kisha/farrah and friends either. so anon can actually discourage open and honest deets on assholes, since we clearly saw the deet-dropper dragged through the mud there and in other cases.
