my point was more about the fact that wankgate has had an overall impact on dwrp culture in general, that "don't look" might spare you some individual stress in some way, but it's not a guaranteed way to not have wankgate never impact your time here.

ayrt. to be clear, i agree with your main point.

like. yes, i generally do suggest people avoid it most of the time because it sucks you down a maddening rabbit hole, but i don't agree with anons who say it has no impact on anything. we really just can't measure that, and i've seen people on the comm say they'll steer clear of people based on namedrops. so there's that.

i also don't agree with people who seem to think wg is just a manifestation of private views that need a space to be vented and is somehow filtering away toxicity from other spaces. i think that's a bit short-sighted when it clearly creates its own kind of toxicity in the form of some real shitters who have cracked the wg "code" as it were and used it to shit on their enemies and muddy the waters about all kinds of things.

as for the argument that wg is useful for calling out toxic people, i'd argue it actually often makes it harder to do so, since the toxic people can just repurpose the anon environment, and a lot of toxicity occurs in private and isn't the kind of thing you can call out without exposing yourself to the scrutiny of the anon environment. a good recent example of this was the kisha and farrah thread under namedrops. by going public, jesse actually exposed themselves to the fangs of anon, for example. we have no idea whether some of those anons were kisha/farrah and friends either. so anon can actually discourage open and honest deets on assholes, since we clearly saw the deet-dropper dragged through the mud there and in other cases.
