Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I used to think I was an okay writer but RP's making me think that I'm not. Most of my tags are a week old. All of them are PSLs the other players were excited for at first. I'm constantly second guessing everything I write. Maybe I make weird choices or my dialog is bad. It takes me hours to write tags.

i feel this

it takes hours

top levels are an exhausting process i dread now because they routinely take me 2-3 days to finish and by then everyone already has like 5+ ongoing threads

it's not like i'm even second guessing that much either, i've also started to resort to some lazy as fuck prompts (because they always get bites, oddly) just to speed things along. all i really want my prompts to be now is 1) does it seem like something this particular character would say/do or does it make sense for them to do, and 2) is it engaging/open-ended enough.

putting both those things in a text box somehow takes me hours, and between work and rl i only have about 2-3 hours of free time a night. i feel like i'm constantly behind everyone. it's extremely frustrating.

if it's taking you multiple days to write a starter (even with only a few hours each day) then you really need to change up how you're writing your top levels. try to have some idea of what kind of situations you want to write before sitting down in your limited free time to write it. most games put up ooc posts for event planning beforehand, so you should already know what you're working with. brainstorm in your free moments during the rest of the day, like while you're driving or waiting in line or whatever. know what you want to write ahead of time so by the time you get to writing you only have to take ten-twenty minutes at most to put it into words.

if you're already doing that and it's still taking you hours to write one top level then i don't know what you tell you. are you just a really slow typer? are your "lazy prompts" still ten times as long as anyone else's? what part is actually making you so slow?

Think about what you're going to write in your downtime, once the OOC plotting post goes up. Then you can approach actually writing the starter with an idea in mind and that should help the process, even if you're a slow typer.

you're not a bad writer. i do this too. i think a lot of people do. what helps me is remembering this: people wouldn't be tagging me if they didn't like at least SOME of my writing. no one's expecting perfection. none of us are stephen king or rick riordan or sarah j maas. you're not going to pump out award winning writing every tag or in any tag at all and that's perfectly okay because you can still have fun and other people will have fun with you regardless.

just do your best. write what you can and just go for it. i promise you no one will judge unless you go totally off the rails and do something comically ooc, not when we're all too bust judging ourselves to care.

rp used to be so stressful until i broke myself of the idea that every tag has to be perfect. as long as it's IC and there's a hook, you're good.

the time it takes me to write is one reason i gave up games

im trying to get over the perfection thing. maybe then i can join a game. memes are lonely

Not sure if it helps, but I feel a lot more comfortable tagging someone who writes a bit weird. It's like all pressure falls off my shoulders and I can so easily write something back. I tag back a lot faster than when someone writes something I feel is so good I have to match and then I flake out because I worry I will never manage.

But what really matters most is writing interesting hooks, keep the dialogue going, give me things to reply to. If you get your character to say or do something that makes me instantly go "Oh I can reply with this!" I will want to start on that reply right away. If your character doesn't do or say anything I can work with, it'll take too much effort, and I will delay tagging...

Apostrophe in "RP"
"Dialog"

You're probably right.

I am very smart.

pedant anon butting in here to say that rp's is actually correct if they're stating it as 'roleplaying is'. it's not a possessive declaration, but it's a who's and this's and what's.

feel free to laugh at dialog.

not like there aren't always shitty typos/mistakes in rpa during comments. so many goddamn typos because of what i can only assume is mobile typing.

In addition to RP's being used correctly in that context, dialog's a variant of dialogue according to most dictionaries.

Maybe the next time you're a cunt, you won't be a stupid one.
