Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

right now i just really want a dressingroom/sandbox style game, minimal apps to keep out known wankers, no ac or check-in only, no cast caps, character duplicates/au/craus/ocs/fandom ocs allowed, chill sol game. jamjared into a deserted island, build-your-own-community, make your own adventure kind of game.

controversially i also really want more straight up au games. like a detective pikachu one.

tbh I have a game like this more or less ready to try out but the "minimal apps to keep out wankers" is my problem. any ideas on how to implement this, anon? I'm only familiar with ALL THE APP or zero app, I'm not sure where the middle line is for Just Enough App and how that would keep wankers out.

going by wankgate right now, having a required hmd will keep some wankers out lol

i was thinking "minimal apps" ala what starhue had https://starhuemod.dreamwidth.org/991.html?thread=479

as far as using it primarily to keep wankers out i guess a mandatory form of contact and mandatory hmd would help, and on mod contact have screened comments so players can bring deets to you with if they see someone suspect throw in a reserve/app

my worst fear as a mod is i don't keep 100% entirely up to date with who's a legitimate problem child you don't want in your game and their admittance in the game would actively discourage other people from apping vs this person has no publicly known wanky history but you can personally attest they'll create an unwelcome environment in the game vs this person is a harmless flake and got one really vocal person upset and their wankgate thread blew up with something entirely unrelated and off-topic. i think the only way to circumvent a lack of knowledge is to openly encourage players to bring deets to yo and you just have to take the time to investigate them. a lot of time and energy if it happens, yeah, but you'll do it only once.

yeah but starhue had a lot of wankers in it

i think a good way a) is to have a mandatory hmd anon-on/ip-off in journals AND posted bimonthly to the game that allows anon (even if you have ip on it'll still deter problem players there, they'll throw a fit) and b) be really stringent on be ic rules and that you'll actually take action and it's not just there as a courtesy (even if you don't actually do this or end up having reason to, the rule itself will deter people) and have it mentioned in the app with "do you agree that upon apping if you are wildly ooc, have more headcanons than canon, and have ample arguments against your icness that it is grounds from being ejected from game" or something like that.

also have straight up accept or reject with revisions only being minor clarifications, needed info, etc. people who get a revision for things they don't know, don't think are important, bad grammar, incorrect info, or whatever should've put their best foot forward, right? if they didn't do that to begin with it's not evidence of how they'll play on average in revision. as an app mod that was forced to follow rules on revisions that were arbitrary, most of the time people would go to their plurk lists and and ask them to essentially edit for them or they'd go read a wiki or take effort to proofread and i can't think of a single revision that wasn't like just expand upon powers or just tell me a tiny more about this that didn't get played as shitty as their app was.

anyway agreed with deets and ngl if you know someone is a real problem, just say you've had multiple complaints about their behavior. if they're a flake that apps to 20 games, asks too many questions and pulls a "you didn't check the real world weather" that doesn't quite break rules but is a pain in the ass to deal with even, you can say i'm sorry but we are trusting players to take the information given and not be hand-held in this low pressure environment and upon multiple complaints of past behavior we are sorry, we cannot accept your application.

also people who get rejected? give them one more chance and they're not allowed to app ANY other character, especially if the problem isn't something minor they don't get but a whole slew of things. some of the bigger problems i had to deal with were rejected people coming back multiple rounds with the max number of characters and same shitty half-assed applications. if they were rejected twice, especially the same character, they're not going to improve. again- this is an application. yes, it's a hobby, but you still are applying to show you AT LEAST make the minimum. if you know they NEVER live up to their apps, that's grounds too.

idk i think about this a lot and what could've saved me a lot of frustration. i'd love to run a small game but i think i'd turn into a dick if i did because of the people who need clarifications about every little thing, think their character is special, keep apping, whatever.

op from https://rpanons.dreamwidth.org/80366.html?thread=246130670#cmt246130670

these are great ideas and i think would work great for a small, tightly-knit plot-driven game, especially where characterization can be held to a high standard and reward players for actually paying attention.

in so far as a chill sol sandbox game, i think the hmd aspects and mod stringency rules would also work well, but i feel like the characterization strictness (especially with headcanon) would go against the spirit of a chill sol game where duplicates and fandom ocs and things like that would be allowed. i'd want a game where players could experiment in, play any weird aus, minor characters, or ocs to their hearts content, but not get scrutinized or kicked out by draconian measures in the name of that experimentation. the stress of "performing" has causes a huge amount of stagnation around here. creativity is stifled. games are same-y. mods are burned out. players don't have any real places to play new characters they are still figuring them out. players who are burned out with old characters don't have any real places to do new things with them outside the boundaries of established canon or the rare game that accepts aus or whatever. the freedom to play in a game without having to deal with wankers or shitty personalities however is a baseline expectation i think should be in any game.

in the hypothetical sol sandbox game i'm desiring, hmd could and should still be present, but perhaps encourage more focus on rooting out (harmful) ooc behavior.

tldr i'm actually okay with a sol sandbox game being "low standard" with characters. i think we should have more avenues for that, tbh, or at least try to change dwrp's attitudes about what arbitrary standards a character should be meeting to be "played" at the expense of creativity that could be done with a less restrained character. i've had the most fun in these games because i was not worrying so much about the characterization and was able to write more fun, engaging storylines with them. but yes all these ideas you outlined go hand in hand with keeping a high standard about ooc behavior, which i think should be more universal. i think you're on to something especially with the mandatory hmds and mods having final say on who stays and goes.
