You’re trying to find icons for an obscure character and struggling, so you take some icons marked DNS and use them, because you’re not planning on tagging outside your musebox or friends on memes. Despite this, the person who marked the icons DNS contacts you and tells you they want you to delete them.

If they did a lot of obvious work on them like with tints or coloring manga or something I might consider deleting them but if it's straight crops, I'd tell them that I'd probably wind up doing similar crops anyway so there's no point in deleting.

I say this as an icon maker but anyone that gets fussy over someone "stealing" plain crops needs to lighten up. Not letting someone else use them just forces them to do a bunch of extra work just cropping the same goddamn caps you did. There's no point other than being possessive and petty and it's not like you own the images in the first place.

Are the icons taken from a manga and colored? Are they fanart? In these cases you should delete.

What you should have done is ask the person who had the icons if they're willing to share. Or if they can point you to the person who made them.

Couple years back I had spent a bullshit amount of time on some icons using some assets and having to do a lot of edits to make icons out of them; I hadn't even thought of putting DNS on them though, until later —

Because someone was kind enough to ask if they were free to use, because they were looking to write the same character and icons didn't really exist for this character (which is why I made my own). I realized it would be weird and annoy me if someone else used the end product of a fair amount of my time, so I shared with them all the assets they would need to make their own, and they were very chill about it and went on their way.

Just ask where to find caps or who did the work. It's not hard. It's considerate and super easy.

if they're fanart, credit the artists and delete whichever ones you can't, and tell the other person to suck it up. if they're canon art/screencaps/whatever else, tell the other person to suck it up. if it's fanart by the other person, suck it up.

Crops ran through a Photoshop filter are not copyright worthy.

tbh this wouldn't be an issue for me because i make my own icons and give my okay for others to use them too. if i'm too lazy to make icons, am i sure i'm not too lazy to play the character or canon review too? plus i'm a perfectionist fuck. sometimes i'll see people's icons and think "wow, that's a nice pose, but i think i'd prefer it if it were a few pixels THAT way." or maybe they used a filter i don't like. or the worst icon crime: BORDERS.

if i were witnessing this, i would not give a fuck about somebody crying about their canon icons if they were cropped and resized with an optional lazy filter. that's my MO for my icons, lol. if somebody wants to take my icons and throw a filter on them or add some cat ears, they did more work than i did imo.

unless they're, say, colored manga icons or something with "a lot" of editing? you don't own a copyright or anything on this dumb picture on the internet, why the fuck do you even care? it's a bunch of pixels you don't even own, they didn't break into your house and steal a poster or a picture frame from you. they're not selling the icons. seriously, who in their right mind would get upset over such minor shit?

i have plenty of extra icons i don't use because i made similar ones that i prefer, i feel like iconing wasn't a complete waste of time if somebody will happily use my rejects.

if i saw somebody on plurk/discord having a meltdown about this, i'd be tempted to unfriend them if they didn't listen to reason.

Considering memes are public, it makes sense that the icon creator saw you and contacted you. Delete them.

If I'm only playing in museboxes with one or two people, I'd ignore them and turn off PMs because I honestly don't care.

If I'm playing in memes, it depends. If they're fanart icons using fanart they did not draw or commission (ie ripped off of Pixiv), I'd credit the original fanartist and ignore them. If it's canon art, I'd remake them myself or just trace over them and recolor them. If it's obviously commissioned work or it says they drew them, I wouldn't have taken them without asking.

In all cases, I wouldn't bother replying because again, I don't care.

i would have asked if you can use them first tbh, people who are into the same thing as you are likely sympathetic about lack of icon material and would probably be willing to help you out if you asked nicely
