I made it clear I was an iconmaker so no one would accuse me of being lazy since that's always the really pathetic go to.

Not sharing icons is like not sharing your toy in the sandbox even though you can actually still play with it the same time as the other kid and even though the other kid would have to walk all the way to the store to get the same toy and might not have the money to.

The images don't belong to us in the first place and there's no reason for us to demand exclusive use other than some weird, petty, possessive complex over immaterial things that were never ours in the first place that it costs us nothing to give away.

Another icon maker and I disagree with your analogy - depending on the types of icons.

If the canon is obscure and I took the screencaps myself from a source that I paid for (e.g. bluray) + worked hard to color and edit into presentability, then it's not nearly as simple as a flashy show or anime that has easily found, easily colored caps. It also doesn't make sense to say "it costs us nothing to give away" when people can and do commission icons of canon sources. Moreover, not every icon maker spends two minutes per icon, or uses other people's .psds or gradients or whatever.

On the other hand, if is a basic crop + slap a filter on it thing, then I agree with your original sentiment and wouldn't be bothered by someone taking those icons. Then again, I don't put dns on icons in the first place. I share my toys (unless the other kid is a bullying little shit).

I do agree about really aggressively photoshopped ones or manga colors because there's a level of actually doing some art/graphic design there. It starts pushing it into someone deserving to be paid for their work.

But a lot of icons don't have that much work into them. Putting DNS on basic crop + slap a filter is fucking stupid. You're basically trying to claim small pictures of the canon are yours just because you resized and tweaked them slightly.

Even then, for a more complicated set, I don't get too fussy about it either. And while I'm not going to hold other iconmakers at gunpoint, I am going to be a little judgey if they're that curmudgeonly. I don't think they're pure evil just that they're Grinches.

As someone who routinely commissions colored manga icons, I put DNS if the person I commissioned doesn't specify what they prefer, because I feel it's only fair that if someone else uses them, they get the colorist's permission. The colorist was paid for an icon set, but if it gets stolen and used by a ton of people who might not credit them for their hours of coloring work, it can kind of suck for them.

Icon crediting for colorists is advertisement for their work and a potential source of future commissions.

you're using another people's work - be an anime, a comic, or whatever - they aren't yours. you're using them under fair use.

so if YOU can use another person's work for your entertainment, then other people can use YOUR work for THEIRS too (as long as they credit and don't claim them as theirs)

man it shouldn't matter what anyone thinks or how they feel

just be considerate and respectful and don't take icons that say don't take/dns on them. why is this so hard and why do you feel entitled to them? make your own or ask respectfully and if they say no DEAL WITH IT. what you percieve as taking only a few seconds or slapping a single filter on might not have and you don't know what their sources were, they might have painstakingly scanned them and ruined their own books or had to mod shit in a game or paid for dvds. you aren't entitled to that and people shouldn't have to explain in detail what they did/how the icons were obtained or commissioned or if they commissioned the art for you to respect them.

false equivalence. one, the images on the icons don't belong to the icon maker. and two, when taking icons, the taker doesn't say *they* made them (well, most of the time anyway), which is the problem with copying tags and apps

using icons made by others *as long as you credit them* is like linking your history section on the app instead of writing it yourself.

taking something and claiming you made it is indeed wrong and unacceptable in all circumstances

lbr people who put dns on stuff they didn't commission/actually do any work on beyond filters just want to be "the only one" with that set. i make all my own icons and filter them out the ass, don't care who uses them as long as i get credit. such a dumb thing to get huffy over.

Yeah, the person upthread saying they should take five minutes to slap filters on like it's really fast is highlighting the problem. If you make the argument "It's easy to do it, so do it yourself, lazy asshole" then that means you're talking about relatively easy icons, in which case what about them means you get ownership?

For most icons, including many that get a DNS slapped on, the alterations weren't extensive enough to be considered art or graphic design to reasonably let people claim any kind of ownership.
