deaf person

This is probably really silly but- I'm used to 'think' with a small voice in my head that tells me all the words and thoughts, what do you 'think' with?

A little voice! To clarify, I am deaf but I have a cochlear implant so I can hear with that. If I take off my cochlear implant I am completely deaf. :) A lot of times it's either a voice or I'm mentally picturing every thought if that makes sense? If I'm reading a recipe about baking cookies in my mind/to myself, I'm going to visualize what a cup of sugar is and not necessarily think with my inside voice "one cup of sugar up in this bitch"

how effective is the cochlear implant? does it sound clear? does it bother you? we're you born deaf?

Re: deaf person

wasn't born deaf, i lost my hearing when i was three years old to spinal meningitis, the biggest part of the cochlear implant that bothers me is having to get a new one every five or so years with technological improvement. it takes a lot of time to get used to the new ones because they add more sound input/depth to them and no one has the patience to work with me to get used to my new one.

sound isn't always clear, its very clear in person but on the phone/skype it can be kind of muddy. cochlear implants aren't effective for everyone but mine is effective enough that most people are genuinely surprised to hear that I'm deaf because they don't expect it. (I only advertise that I'm deaf when I can't hear other people or when people grow impatient because I ask them to repeat everything.)

something i just remembered while getting dressed; i hate that i cant wear cute skirts and dresses half the time because of my cohclear implant processor getting in the way. i have an older system that is bulky/doesn't fit behind the ear.

my new one fits behind the ear but interferes with my glasses

I hope that covered everything but feel free to ask additional/follow up questions :)

Somebody else beat me to the question I wanted to ask! I work with Deaf and hard-of-hearing people but was always afraid to ask that one.

Another then. If it's not too invasive to ask; did you lose your hearing or were you born deaf? I've heard that people who lose their hearing have a harder time adjusting to the cochlear implant due to the electronic sound. It basically can be hit or miss, depending on how you apply yourself? I was wondering if you had a difficult time 'learning' the sounds or if they were sort of... the only sounds you're accustomed to.

I know I can't speak for everyone who is deaf/Deaf but I always encourage people to ask me questions and likewise I ask similar 'silly' questions. You'll never know/learn unless you ask! :)

To expand upon the other answer I gave the above anon; I lost my hearing due to spinal meningitis when I was three years old. Around that time they didn't have the vaccines for meningitis and not everyone survived meningitis. They don't know if it was the meningitis or the steroids used to kill the meningitis that made me deaf but I lost use of my cochlear either way. I was deaf for approximately a year before I got the cochlear implant. Because of my young age plus being deaf with no sound for a year, it was an easier transition I suppose? I'm blessed with having parents who worked really hard in the early years to help me get where I am... But...

I'm extremely accustomed to my old cochlear implant and have a hard time with my new one because I have to 're-learn' some sounds because they sound so different :( It doesn't help having an audiologist who is impatient and doesn't want to slowly help me ease into it because "you'll have to just get used to this like everyone else." Since I'm older, my parents don't have the patience to work with me as extensively as they did when I first got my cochlear implant over twenty years ago.

1) do you ever use sign at all, or did you not learn since you can still hear with an implant? is learning sign something you're interested in, or do you think you'll never look into since you don't need it personally?

2) do you have any Deaf friends you've met through either chance or through Deaf/HoH communities?

3) when you go to the movies, do you prefer subtitled showings or un-subbed?

1) I learned sign for the year that I was deaf without the implant. my family (primarily my mom and sometimes my dad) uses sign around the house for when I don't have my implant on. learning sign has been something I've been interested in and i actually took some ASL classes in my college years- I've learned enough to hold basic conversations.

2) I unfortunately don't have any deaf friends. :( Most people I met during my ASL classes that were deaf were teachers or hearing ASL students. Almost ironically, I was part of a student organization during college and I actually met a HoH student who held the same position as me in another school! He doesn't really like to be called deaf or HoH though but we shared similar struggles.

I still hope that maybe one day I'll meet a deaf gamer like me and we can hang out.

3) If I'm at the movies I don't ask for captions but if I'm watching movies at home on dvd/hulu/netflix/etc. I almost always put on captions. I don't always like asking for captions because of the kind of stigma/annoyance that hearing folk get.

Although nowadays I've heard movie theaters have special glasses that do the subtitles and don't put them on the screen. That is super cool except I wear glasses because of my poor eyesight so that might interfere with the cool subtitle glasses. Still, cool technology.

I'm curious to know what you mean by "asking for captions" at the movies. do you mean when you go out to the movies with friends, or will theatres apply subs to a showing if they know there is a deaf person in the audience? (in my area, cinemas have a small number of ready subtitled showings and that's the extent of it).

thank you for your answers, in any case! I hope you'll meet some deaf gamer buddies someday.

Usually if you want captions at the movies you have to ask ahead of time. There's no way to know that there is a deaf audience member unless someone explicitly tells the theater. I don't usually like asking because I get eye-rolling and sighing and feel like I'm an inconvenience even though that's my given right to enjoy life just as anyone else would.

My guess for your area is that there is a heavy Deaf population or at least enough Deaf people who frequent the area to lock down ready subtitled showings. But I've never had that in my area.

I know there are reddit channels that basically bring the disAbility community together via gaming but I haven't had any luck yet.

I'm not certain how widespread their services are, but my most local cinema chain (this is in the UK, ftr) offers subbed screenings (albeit not a whole lot of them), as well as special autism-friendly screenings of kids movies. which is really cool, because afaik none of the other cinemas in my neck of the woods offer that. odeon are good peeps.

it's hard-hearted for people to complain about subs when, as you say, you're just as entitled to enjoy the showing as anyone else present. and it's such a minor thing too. oh no, a line of words at the bottom of the screen, however will we enjoy the movie now?

oooh (i'm in the usa ftr) So maybe it could be just that? I know areas in the USA that have dense Deaf populations have sub screenings but I also know nowadays a lot of Deaf youth don't really bother with movies as much as they used to because of things like netflix, hulu, internet and texting. The scope of deaf youth communicating has expanded a lot these days.

Yeah. I guess because of spoilers coming before you see it on screen but like. If that's such a problem, people should be complaining to sub companies not the sub themselves.
