The mysterious depths of his manly cave

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

what's the etiquette for talking to mods about squatting? I've never done it before but it's getting unbearable with a certain cast member

(Anonymous) 2017-03-25 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if there's any specific etiquette, but to give some advice...

- Provide them with evidence to show the other player is squatting. Find all of their threads that you can, which shouldn't take too long if they're really barely scraping by, or show how many of their threads are just hitting the bare minimum for AC before dropping them. Use their AC history against them if they have a lot of strikes or hiatuses. If you can pull up examples of times where this player's inactivity has personally affected your character and their ability to be IC, even better.

- Don't make demands ("boot this player from the game!"), it's up to the mods to decide what to do in the end. If they want to give the player a warning first, respect that choice. Also don't be rude to them, but that's a given. Being polite and reasonable will always help your case.

- If the player gets a warning and time passes and they're still scraping by without further mod intervention, follow up with the mods. Maybe give the player a month or two to try and get their shit together and/or collect more evidence of their squatting, then approach the mods again if they're still at it.

- If you go through all of this and the player is still around and squatting months later, drop the game because the mods probably suck.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-25 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, as someone who handled this both as a player and as a mod:

Don't go in guns blazing, demanding a certain course of action. Squatters are frustrating, yes, but if you go in, immediately demanding that the mods remove X from the game and what not, you'll only raise hackles.

Do breach the subject very directly and providing as much proof as possible. You don't need some long story. Just try and get as straight to the point as possible. Name the player and the character, show your proof (if they always drop your threads three tags in, show evidence of that, refer to any patterns in activity like only posting just before the AC hits), if it affects your character mention that but no need to go into a huge story. Mention whether you have or have not talked to the player yourself yet. The more the mods know about the situation the better. If any of your convos are on publicly available HMDs, link them too.

And then just. Sit back. It is up to the mods to discuss things with the player / come up with how they want to handle the situation, so you'll need a little patience too while they figure out the best course of action.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Collect evidence, especially if they're consistently using hiatuses and strikes to pass. Dropping threads once they reach AC length and boomeranging on the last few days of the month to get AC are also good evidence. Evidence like this is better than just pointing to their tagged activity. Some people are terrible at tagging posts their character is involved in so a lack of threads in their tag doesn't always mean they aren't playing.

2. If other castmates have expressed concerns, ask them if it's okay to mention them. This helps both you and the mods if they decide to confront the player, as a lot of people default to "anyone accusing me of squatting is just upset that I'm not playing with them". That argument doesn't work as well when multiple people complain.

3. If you know anyone who is interested in applying for the character if the squatter was removed...don't bring it up. It might make the mods suspicious that you want this player out so a friend of yours can app and they'll view your complaint with more scrutiny.

4. Be prepared to have them tell you their hands are tied unless the player actually fails AC. Unfortunately a lot of mods just don't do much to combat squatting, either because they're nervous about taking official action based on subjective complaints, or because they just genuinely feel that any player who doesn't actually fail is active enough, even if they hiatus pass every other month.

Hi rpanons, I'm mostly new to Dreamwidth rp (I used to RP on Livejournal when I was younger....) and while I have been doing a little bit of meme threads i only just made a plurk and I was wondering what the etiquette is about adding people? Is it okay to fan public plurks for they look interesting? Can I use the search feature and add people in my fandom? Can I add people I did a thread with on bakerstreet? At the moment most of my community info comes from quietly reading this community and while you guys are great I would rather also have some people with names and faces attached. Thank you sorry if this is the wrong place!

(Anonymous) 2017-03-25 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
i would advise against adding people at random. most don't add people they don't know. mass-adds are generally only acceptable after joining a game, and only if the person has their contact info listed plainly for anyone to send a request to.

you can certainly PM people you've threaded with on bakerstreet. i've added people that way. just be aware not everyone will be willing to friend strangers as many people use plurk as a personal sort of twitter as well as rp update thing. as long as you phrase your request politely nobody will think it's weird though.

orz noob-ish question but how late is it too late to tag into other people's threads on a test drive meme?

i.e. most comments made around end feb/first week or march with no new comments on said thread i want to tag into......

(Anonymous) 2017-03-25 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
everyone is going to have a different opinion on how late is too late

you can just tag, the worst case scenario is that they don't reply. alternately you can pm them and ask if they would be up for a thread

I'm getting butthurt that I go through great lengths to underplay and tone down my (obscure) character's OPness so everyone can have fair play, but meanwhile everyone I play against is whipping out their Goku beams or Fate/Stay/Whatevers or bragging about how they need to be destroyed to .000001% of their body mass to have a chance of dying.

Why do I even bother. Should I even bother?

Yes because otherwise you'll just become one of those assholes with inferiority complexes who need to be THE STRONGEREST EVURR you're complaining about.

why not just not tell your friends you're apping to a place, and don't talk about it on plurk? making a new handle seems like a lot of work and people are going to assume it's because you're trying to hide something anyway.

how many of you rp the same character at different games? are there any tips and tricks that you have for keeping the versions distinct?

I'm thinking of apping a character I already play in game A to a different game B. the settings are different enough & I'm thinking of choosing different canon points, but this would be my first time playing the same character at two games and I don't really know if there are any obvious tips for doing that which I just don't know about

(Anonymous) 2017-03-27 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
i've done this a few times. it's usually easier for me right off the bat if one game has powers nerfed, but that isn't something you can necessarily choose if the games both allow powers or your character doesn't have one. that said, a difference in setting can usually help a lot in a similar regard.

my advice would be primarily:

1. make an effort interact with different canons in both games. it's easier to distinguish between two games when your muse meets totally different people in both. in the same vein, if at all possible, avoid playing off of the same character in both games if they both have that character [i.e. if you have cr with thor in game 1, you may struggle with balancing cr with game 2's thor]. i find it one of the quickest ways to confuse myself wrt what my muse knows about another pc's history/canon.

2. make private posts on your journal/google docs/notepad/whatever indicating your EXACT canon point, worldstate if it can differ, and any other telling details about your muse's entry point for BOTH games. this has helped me remember differing aspects in my muse's history. if you want, add important in-game events to this list as you go.

3. if you don't do a thread tracker, start. that way if you forget events, threads, things you've already covered, things you have or haven't found out about other canon worlds/characters, you can always reference the exact threads.

like i said, some of this might not even be relevant depending on the character and the games, but i hope it helps or gives you some ideas.

former friend/rp partner disappeared for two years without a word. not a damn word. i actually thought she was dead. turns out she was just fine, but off doing other things under a different alias and couldn't be bothered to let me know once in a while that she was, you know. breathing. now she's bored, so she wants to start hanging out again. after two years of radio silence.

are people really this delusional? i'm stunned.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-28 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
been there, done that. it blows when you considered someone a close friend.

drop her.

IDEAL AC REWARDS SYSTEM

(Anonymous) 2017-03-28 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
inspired by a wg thread, but it's here because the topic isn't inherently wanky.

what would your ideal ac rewards system be like, anons? or, if your answer is "get rid of them entirely," what would you prefer instead? any pet peeves about the way games do it now?

Re: IDEAL AC REWARDS SYSTEM

(Anonymous) 2017-03-28 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
personally, the only thing that really makes sense to me as an "AC reward" is something like priority slots in events. players that you can count on to be active are the ones you trust to take your metaplot and involve lots of other characters in it.

everything else seems super pointless. rp is a hobby. the act of rping itself is supposed to be fun. if you need to have a carrot waved in front of your face to have fun, that's a problem either with the player or with the basic design of the game. if player inactivity is hurting the game, bump your ac up or provide more setting or metaplot to get your players interested again.

ac rewards as they're usually done, where players being active leads to characters getting resources, has always felt to me like "you must spend this much time not having as much fun as you could have had before you are allowed to have more fun", which just feeds into a cycle of treating rp like a chore and procrastinating on it. giving the characters those resources from the beginning lets the characters do more varied and interesting things with the setting, which should naturally lead to higher activity because players actually have new and exciting things to thread about.

OK: half-hypothetical scenario, from the viewpoint of the mods of game.

Suppose you're part of several mods and you all collaborate on apps. The app rules are p standard, nothing ridiculous, but one of them is a restriction on playing characters from a New Canon. Like, a game just came out, people want to avoid spoilers, so the limit on apping characters from this game is...idk, a couple weeks? A month? Whatever seems appropriate.

Someone follows these rules to a T. They app a spoilerific character from this new game, and it's past the time limit indicated in the rules. The problem is, all the mods reviewing the app haven't played this game yet. All want to, haven't, and want to avoid ruining their experience by reading spoilers. That this person's app is pretty much 100% made up of.

You're one of the mods. What do you do.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-28 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
i'd just bite the bullet and spoil myself. yeah it would have been nice to experience the canon without any spoilers, but it's not that big of a deal, and it wouldn't be very fair to the applicant to refuse to review their app when they stayed within the rules and everything.

Is there an extension or app for chrome that will insert html in a comment based on input? I used to use ljtools for firefox and I had it set up to where I could type "/img" and it would change that to the appropriate img tag with whatever url I had on clipboard. Or I could just type /url words/ and it would turn that into a link with 'words' as the text.

Anyone know a way to do that with chrome? Or an idea of what the hell I should search for in the chrome store? Because just looking up "html" gives me a trillion page editors and that's not what I want. I just want to not type a bunch of <'s :C

(Anonymous) 2017-03-28 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
iirc there's a dreamwidth tools extension but idr if it's in the official store or on another website.

how do you deal with two tittybabies who had a falling out and now demonize each other whenever the other one comes up in conversation?

one is especially bad about it. like "they're not sick from their serious fucking health problem, they're just lazy and irresponsible!" type of cray-cray. the other one is more mild about it in a "pfft, they're batshit, llke i trust anything they say about anything" kind of way.

the first one definitely comes off as a bratty teenager, doesn't help that they dropped out of high school and then dropped out of college because it was "too boring" even though somebody offered to pay their tuition.

avoiding either of them is unfortunately not an option.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-29 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
ignore it and change the subject. generally when people keep bitching about the same topic over and over, it's because they're being allowed to. you might think you're being a good friend by saying "uh huh" "oh wow" "damn" etc but it's really just enabling them to keep going on like a broken record.

so a conversation should go like:

person: they're not sick from their serious fucking health problem, they're just lazy and irresponsible!
you: hey did you hear about (something completely unrelated)

or maybe:

person: they're not sick from their serious fucking health problem, they're just lazy and irresponsible!
you: (utter silence)
person: ...
you: cool, i just caught a clefairy in pokemon go

or even:

person: they're not sick from their serious fucking health problem, they're just lazy and irresponsible!
you: (utter silence)
you: (continued silence)

that should shut them up fast.
