yep! although it was actually shinier in the prequels/back in the day, and the in-universe explanation for that is the shift to sturdiness and utility over aesthetic and elegance once the Republic collapsed and the Empire took over. as far as the Empire's concerned, pretty things are very low priority, and if it's crude but cheaper and gets the job done, they'll pick cheap every time. not to mention the financial imbalance in general across the galaxy once the Empire hit--aside from the people at the very top, most everyone just can't afford shiny and sleek

One of my favorite games of all time was Glaxcin Prison.
This sounds kind of like that. I'd play in it.

i dont necessarily buy that imperial tech emphasizes functionality over looks when their ships, interiors, and set pieces are significantly cleaner looking and more lean in shape than anything else in the series.

compare the sleek, angular, almost art-deco star destroyers to the clunky ass mass of shapes that are the alliance ships, for example.

yeah like i said that could be a finance thing too? naturally the imperials will pour what money they've got into their war machines (see: star destroyers, the death star), whereas the alliance was never exactly rolling in legal riches

either way everything was a lot more artsy all around back when the republic was around for sure. kinda like sliding from handcraftsmanship to the industrial revolution, i guess? but we all know the producers just wanted to show off some shiny cg with the prequels after the special effects limits of the 70's original trilogy, so all this guesswork floating around is just nerds trying to align those changes to the universe anyway lol

it is a fact that imperials don't really believe in patronage, at least non-propaganda related patronage, the way the republic did, but just coming from a design perspective, outside the canon reasoning for it, the imperial tech just looks cleaner, sleeker than anything else in the movie. the republic was kind of the same. get off coruscant and stuff was mostly pretty ugly, with few exceptions.

yeah, i hear you there. though the naboo queen's shiny-ass cruiser was def a matter of pretty form over useful function too. now that you mention it, even the republic wasn't completely immune to that financial imbalance either probably, lol

neat stuff either way. ngl im kind of fond of the alliance's raggedy barely-holding-together probably-patched-up-a-thousand-times aesthetic. you could tell they were using everything they could get their hands on off the imperial grid. like an above anon said, it's a fun contrast to the usual shiny scifi
