it is a fact that imperials don't really believe in patronage, at least non-propaganda related patronage, the way the republic did, but just coming from a design perspective, outside the canon reasoning for it, the imperial tech just looks cleaner, sleeker than anything else in the movie. the republic was kind of the same. get off coruscant and stuff was mostly pretty ugly, with few exceptions.
