What exactly do you think the point of fanfiction, roleplaying, and the core concept of fandom is? It's not just to celebrate what's there, it's to fill in the blanks.

Homestuck is a rare beast, in that the blanks won't be completely filled in for probably another year. That doesn't mean fans shouldn't be open to trying new characters out anyway. I've seen pumpkins and buckets RPed from Homestuck, both of which have had far less characterization than the two new trolls.

Hussie himself has said he doesn't mind fans making up headcanon that he later debunks. If you don't want to play with those characters, you don't have to. But I say more power to them. They'll be more in the realm of OCs than canon characters at this point, but there's nothing wrong with that, either. It's a game; we're meant to have fun with characters and situations that inspire us; it's not worth getting upset over.

there's a difference between "filling in blanks" and "writing what essentially amounts to an oc because there are more blanks than canon." the first one is fine, like you said, that's what we do. the second one is something that shouldn't be accepted in a game, sorry. they can meme and musebox it up until there's enough canon to make them appable characters. it won't kill you to wait.

How about fuck you? Go play in a musebox or write your own fanfic if you really need to explore Meenah or Aranea in greater detail after one pesterlog. Castwide retcons aren't fun. CR-wide memory adjustments are even less so. One person's exciting new shiny isn't worth being a huge non-canon pain in the ass for the rest of us.

Sure, I guess we might not know ABSOLUTELY everything about Meenah or Aranea for a long time, but why app into something with a continuity where retcons are a huge pain in the ass when it's a matter of weeks before you have to make massive retcons?

Remember that thing about how there were Roxy and Dirk players before the reveal that they live in the goddamn future? Nobody's saying not to make fanworks about them, but "fanworks" are isolated things, your old fanfic has no bearing on any future fanfic you write. Bringing them into a big community pool in which you're expected to have consistent characterization and make sure things make sense is a terrible idea when they are guaranteed to get lots more characterization than they already have in canon.

this is the situation that happened with the alpha kids. i'm less side-eye about people apping them now but i still think they should wait just a bit for more canon info. pretty much every single alpha rper i've seen who apped them before much info came out has already dropped the game they apped at.

these trolls have literally had one pesterlog each. there's also a very big chance we'll get more info on them. it won't kill you to wait, and no, you do not have to be "first".

Good for him! The people that are directly involved as castmates, however, obviously have plenty to say about it. Keep it to memes or private stuff until we at least know where these characters came from and what they want besides the vague 'true reality' thing Aranea spouted off yesterday.

I'm impressed, RP Anons. I expected vitriol to my response and you did not disappoint. In fact, you passed with flying colors. Very well done.

Anyway, I agree that cast-wide retcons are abominable, but there's a simple fix to this. Characters apped with headcanons that are later debunked automatically become original characters. If you app another character later after Hussie has revealed more canon and they comment on the differences, chalk it up to be another alternate timeline. Problem solved.

so meenah and aranea are going to meet in person and probably talk about their session or whatever with terezi, and aranea's already given us some backstory on the session - i.e. that they've been hanging around dead, watching shit unfold for billions of years, and know absolutely everything about the ancestors and trolls.

we may be in danger of them having just enough canon to app, guys.
