Stick a fork in it

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.

Not that there were a lot of differences between them, but... TV or comic? Any ideas about where in canon you're taking him from?

Maya Schrödinger | Wild ARMS 3

(Anonymous) 2012-03-27 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The last Game Ideas thread has rekindled my desire to try playing her, but I'm not experienced with playing side characters.

Any opinions on her personality or ideas on how to handle her (lack of) history would be great! I'd probably take her from post-game.

Man, this is gonna be tough, as Maya is one of those characters that's still mostly a mystery to me even AFTER finishing the game. So I'll keep it to simple points and hopefully those with more experience can chime in with deeper understanding.

Firstly, A good chunk of what we see of Maya throughout the game is a facade. While there are touches of her real personality, for the most part she's acting a role she found in a book (specifically, she's meant to be acting like Jane Maxwell from WA1). Her reasoning for this is made clear in the game after the Prophets get a hold of her, so I'd definitely play very close attention to those scenes in the game. They reveal a lot about her. If she's not putting on a persona, she lacks confidence in herself.

Secondly, while she is Virginia's foil, the two also have a lot in common. Maya is just more traditional when it comes to the ways of Drifters, modeling Calamity Jane once again to a large extent. It seems cold, but it's more that she doesn't want people like Virginia getting themselves killed because of their ideals. She'd be the sort to talk someone out of pulling off Stupid Shonen Hero tropes, even if she performs a few feats like these herself later in the game (evidence of Virginia's persona rubbing off on her).

... I can't think of anything else relevant to say, so hopefully that helps.

[personal profile] mnementomori 2012-03-28 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Two points I can think of off the top of my head: Xion is only a year old, and she wasn't made with any knowledge, so everything she knows is what she's learned on missions/the worlds she's been to, and from Axel. So she'd be lacking some basic concepts, especially social ones. (what a family is, etc.)

The second is that she's kind of emotionally stunted. She grew up thinking she couldn't feel, so she rejected a lot of her feelings in a kind of unhealthy way. She's more likely to run off and be alone then explain what she's feeling to someone. She doesn't like troubling people, but she's kind of childish so she doesn't realize when she's being selfish.

that's all I can think of atm, but I'll return to this is something comes to me.

Haymitch Abernathy | The Hunger Games

(Anonymous) 2012-03-28 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Thinking of taking him from the film. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-28 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Even though Haymitch is a drunken smartass, he does have good advice when he's not too intoxicated to deliver it. He obscures his opinions in all kinds of ways, so it's important to remember that he does express fondness for people he does like. He just does it very creatively. (Or very openly, depending on how much booze he's taken in, obviously.) If you haven't already, I'd recommend reading the books; aside from giving you a larger reference pool to draw from for Haymitch (his personality seems to be slightly different, from the one time I've seen the movie), there are a lot of details in the later books that are vital to understanding Haymitch and how he thinks.

Kairi | Kingdom Hearts

(Anonymous) 2012-03-28 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Most likely taking her after KHII.

Re: Kairi | Kingdom Hearts

(Anonymous) 2012-03-28 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
She becomes extremely reserved and quiet early in KH2, but this doesn't mean you should negate everything from KH1. Our first glimpse of her shows her as highly competitive--just as much as the boys, as she initiates a race with them. She's also very spunky and fierce, willing to take on both Ansem and Saix with her fists. As much as she is the damsel in distress, this doesn't make her helpless or even unwilling to do anything.

Between the first and second games, she learned something she didn't have much of: patience. This is what allows her to wait. But she also says she is DONE waiting, because Sora and Riku are her MOST important people. She is willing to do a lot for them, and Kairi is extremely determined. Perhaps the only reason she let the boys go without her is she would know she's not ready for the exam.

She is flawed, though. While she is brave, this can tend toward recklessness. Running off into the darkness, facing Ansem and Saix with her fists, jumping down to face Heartless with no weapon...

Um... Besides this, anything specific you'd like to know?

Finnick Odair | The Hunger Games Trilogy

[personal profile] netted 2012-03-29 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Thinking about taking him from Catching Fire during his time at the Hunger Games, possibly after encountering the Jabberjays but before Beetee executes his plan.

Re: Finnick Odair | The Hunger Games Trilogy

(Anonymous) 2012-03-30 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
not a finnick player, but some things that might help:

- finnick, imo, is not the type who would blatantly lie, but dances around his true intentions with half-truths and careful withholding of information. think of how he answers katniss when they first meet, his line about dealing with secrets: it's true, but the way he phrases it and his body language lead katniss to think he's being somewhat facetious.

- he doesn't let things bother him very much if he can help it. he knows how to prioritize rationality over emotions, but this doesn't dehumanize him at all - he doesn't let his feelings cloud his judgment, but when he has the opportunity to express himself he does. think about his reaction to mags's sacrifice and the jabberjays. also, compare finnick in catching fire, where he seems to mostly be thinking "now, what's the next step in the plan?" to finnick in mockingjay, where he finally has the time and space to let himself break down.

- on that note, he's only human and he has his limits. while there are clearly people he cares about, annie is the only one we see in the series who can really make him break down.

- at heart he has good intentions, but based on what he says about nobody accidentally winning the hunger games (or something like that, i don't remember the exact line), he probably would dip into the moral gray/black zone if the ends justify the means. but only if the ends justify the means: in mockingjay, annie says finnick would never support a final hunger games, since... what's the point, really, except to exact some sort of petty revenge?

Well! If Maya anon had luck then maybe this isn't such a shot in the dark. (I hope!)

So far my main issue seems to be working up a consistent voice for the kid. Yeah, this is pretty much my first time attempting a silent protagonist so I'd love pointers from anyone with that sort of experience. Or heck, any advice in general!

Still stuck on whether to take him from the original or remake, though I don't think it'd make TOO big of a difference for his character? At least not from what I've noticed. Like I said, any bits of advice would be awesome.

Yes, I'm serious.

Re: The Once-ler | The Lorax (2012)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-03 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Please, for the love of God, don't make him a moeblob. The biggest problem I've noticed in the fandom, such as it is, is that people interpret him as being too innocent and sweet and derpy. I'm not saying he can't be any of those things, but you really have to draw them out. Even before he makes it big and gets rich, he's still a rude jackass who cares more about chasing his dream than doing the right thing unless he's pushed to it. He's self-centered and prickly, but not to a malicious extent until well after he's become a millionaire.

I guess how mean/nice you want make him really depends on what point in canon you're taking him from. You have a lot more leeway if it's during the height of his success or right after the Lorax leaves as opposed to when he's just starting out as a wandering ~dreamer~. Just keep in mind that he's not A Nice Person and you should be okay.
