What exactly do you think the point of fanfiction, roleplaying, and the core concept of fandom is? It's not just to celebrate what's there, it's to fill in the blanks.

Homestuck is a rare beast, in that the blanks won't be completely filled in for probably another year. That doesn't mean fans shouldn't be open to trying new characters out anyway. I've seen pumpkins and buckets RPed from Homestuck, both of which have had far less characterization than the two new trolls.

Hussie himself has said he doesn't mind fans making up headcanon that he later debunks. If you don't want to play with those characters, you don't have to. But I say more power to them. They'll be more in the realm of OCs than canon characters at this point, but there's nothing wrong with that, either. It's a game; we're meant to have fun with characters and situations that inspire us; it's not worth getting upset over.

there's a difference between "filling in blanks" and "writing what essentially amounts to an oc because there are more blanks than canon." the first one is fine, like you said, that's what we do. the second one is something that shouldn't be accepted in a game, sorry. they can meme and musebox it up until there's enough canon to make them appable characters. it won't kill you to wait.

How about fuck you? Go play in a musebox or write your own fanfic if you really need to explore Meenah or Aranea in greater detail after one pesterlog. Castwide retcons aren't fun. CR-wide memory adjustments are even less so. One person's exciting new shiny isn't worth being a huge non-canon pain in the ass for the rest of us.

Remember that thing about how there were Roxy and Dirk players before the reveal that they live in the goddamn future? Nobody's saying not to make fanworks about them, but "fanworks" are isolated things, your old fanfic has no bearing on any future fanfic you write. Bringing them into a big community pool in which you're expected to have consistent characterization and make sure things make sense is a terrible idea when they are guaranteed to get lots more characterization than they already have in canon.

this is the situation that happened with the alpha kids. i'm less side-eye about people apping them now but i still think they should wait just a bit for more canon info. pretty much every single alpha rper i've seen who apped them before much info came out has already dropped the game they apped at.

Good for him! The people that are directly involved as castmates, however, obviously have plenty to say about it. Keep it to memes or private stuff until we at least know where these characters came from and what they want besides the vague 'true reality' thing Aranea spouted off yesterday.

If you app another character later after Hussie has revealed more canon and they comment on the differences, chalk it up to be another alternate timeline. Problem solved.

give one good reason why any structured game should allow a character that has literally no canon background with implications that they'll get said canon background in the future. Except a lot of games don't accept OCs (and even those that do may not accept canon OCs which is what this would be) or AUs, which is where the "alternate timeline" would lead.

Besides, this isn't a matter of having to retcon a simple fact that a character should know but the player doesn't because canon hasn't told us yet (for example, Vriska being God Tier which she hit during the game but we didn't know about until much later) and retconning every single detail about characters that have a handful of dialogue in some dream bubbles and that's it. For something that big? Like hell the rest of the cast should have to deal with more time bullshit because someone got impatient about apping the shiny new character.

As an addendum, I would hope that most games wouldn't allow them to be apped anyway at this stage. There's a difference between headcanon to fill in the blanks and headcanon because there's no canon history which by rights should make them unappable.

your oc/au argument is also terrible, most games don't allow those. there's a reason practically none of the first wave of alphas are still around. and if you're playing a character with so little canon that one update can destroy our entire perception of them, they do not need to be in a fucking game yet. how self-centered do you have to even be, just play the damn new trolls on your own time and wait until we know what these guys are up to.

That's totally ridiculous. What if a game doesn't accept canon OCs or AUs? What about the other characters that interacted with that character and took the erroneous headcanon for granted? Do they become OCs too?

What the hell about a confusing clusterfuck like that is better than just waiting for a few months for an incredibly finite story that the author has admitted is in its final stages to be finished.
