Rundown:
rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.
Rules:
Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 05:48 am (UTC)(link)To put an example, I remember Donkey Kong Country 2. Those boss fights scared me a lot when I was a kid (the ghost of a gigantic crow you killed earlier, a demon sword from hell, a nigh-invincible and gigantic bee-wasp that pursues you to terrifying music the previous level), and yet it always felt so triumphant when I finally got to beat any of them, I felt I was actually in an adventure.
Either I have grown up too much, or most games struggle to make bosses that can actually scare you and be actually difficult to fight, so you do feel accomplishment when you win.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 09:17 am (UTC)(link)i also think a lot of games struggle to balance making a boss difficult enough that it feels like a real triumph when you beat them, without making them so difficult that they stop being fun

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)Even with higher difficulty modes in most games, they just aren't hard. Part of this is indeed the fact that devs are clueless about how to make a challenge, but a larger part is that a lot of players don't want one.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)However, I don't necessarily agree that old games had harder bosses or harder gameplay. A lot of the difficulty in older games comes from bad game design, poor coding, bugs, or intentionally making things unfairly difficult in order to extend the life of the game to prevent people from beating it in a few days and returning it to the store afterward. So while they were hard, it wasn't because they were designed with the idea of difficulty = accomplishment or fun. To make something that is both hard and fun without relying on bad mechanics or cheap tricks is in itself very difficult. Most games today focus more on having a good gameplay experience and bosses that are fun to fight, not necessarily difficult.
That said, DKC2 is a beautifully designed game.
+1
(Anonymous) 2016-06-28 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)same reason why arcade games are classical difficult, too. it's not meant to reward the player, it's meant to reward the dev/publisher with more of your money.
