I've been writing smut for, um, almost 20 years? And yeah, my style has changed from the beginning, but it hasn't changed in a long time, since I found the way I liked writing and haven't really veered from there. Creature of habit, me.

also that you think people in their late thirties/early forties are remotely rare in this hobby.

if you start writing smut under the age of 15 it's a creepy and bad sign

hate to burst your bubble, but i'm pretty sure a lot of people started writing smut around their early teens, if not reading it at the very least. i started around 12 myself. it's not creepy by any means when it's harmless exploration.

unless you want to get into the argument of playing smut while underage against an adult, which is a whole 'nother can of worms.

I think if you start writing smut with others on the internet at fifteen or a little under it's a bad thing because, dude, you're doing sex-related stuff as a minor no matter if you're putting imaginary barbies between yourselves, and even if someone else lies and says they're also under eighteen there is a high chance that you're likely to pick up creepers (at worst) and sketchy habits from otherwise harmless but dumb as fuck people over the age of majority. Regardless of how mature a teen thinks they are, there's the opportunity to be a newbie that gets taken advantage of in some way.

On the other hand, if you're telling me that being a precocious teenager writing shitty fanfics isn't something that is a part of this day and age I don't know what to tell you. It's sketchy and unfortunate to be posting that stuff in a public place because of the potential age divide with your audience and similar opportunities for skeevy people to encourage potentially skeevy habits and behaviours, but teenagers usually take no sass on being told they should be sexless robots until they magically hit eighteen, not unless they've been brainwashed to hate themselves for it.

I'd say the best approach would be to honour sites that demand 'no under 18' players or browsers etc, but if you're going to lie about your age, do a very thorough job of protecting your name and whereabouts from creeps who might try to befriend you out of character--and think objectively about whether something feels a little off in your gut about interactions with others. It should go without saying that if you find out you're playing against someone who's under the age of majority that you should stop, but some people need it said loud and clear.
