Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I'm going to punch the next person who points to STEM degrees as the solution to unemployment. I have a STEM degree. It is not helping. The STEM shortage is a pile of BS to justify outsourcing. And because I do have the STEM degree, no one wants to hire me for any other crap jobs because they figure I'll jump ship the minute I get a STEM related offer. Which I would but I need to pay my fucking rent.

It is! My loans are paid off, I own a condo, and I can pay my mother's medical bills for her.

DA dunno why you think it's appropriate or acceptable to come in this particular thread and rub people's faces in it.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-24 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
because the anon made it seem like the degree was useless when it's not

(Anonymous) 2016-06-24 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
you sure it's not because you're an asshole?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-24 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Why the fuck would a comment about struggling to find work despite having a degree that is supposed to be employable be an appropriate place to brag about your job?

found the autist

Yeah, I've known plenty of people with those degrees who couldn't find jobs either. I know sometimes I wonder if the fact that I have a useless bachelor's is a problem for me getting even a crap job as well. I know my degree is useless, I can't afford to go back to school and even if I could I have no clue what I would want to do. I'm actually one of those rare people who feels college wasn't really the right thing for me. I don't need a six figure salary to be happy, I just need to be able to pay my rent and bills, buy food and have a bit of extra to buy some games and I'm happy. I can do that on $11/hr easily.

Do you mind if I ask which STEM field? Mostly because it's such a huge and diverse field; I'm getting a degree in one (but plan to go on to grad school) and I know that some of the degrees definitely get hyped up as being INSTANT JOB CREATORS!!!1! but they've become so hyped that there's actually too many people in the fields now and they're incredibly competitive. Other fields there truly are shortages and even a BA gets you a nice job.

*huge and diverse category (science, technology, engineering, and medical combined is an insanely large amount of actual subjects of study/focus) I mean.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-24 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Chemistry. It was supposed to be a solid field when I started grad school but the recessions were not remotely kind to the industries involved

ayrt

Oh yeah that sucks. I have a friend who's a chem doctoral student and she's mentioned there are serious problems with getting a job.

I hope you find a job in your field/somewhere else interesting that you can apply your degree toward soon though. :(

The worst part of being unemployed with a grad degree in STEM is a lot of services that are supposed to help with job hunting just look at your resume and go "Wow, you have really impressive qualifications" and can't actually help because they know how to help people land admin assistant jobs and didn't even realize people could end up unemployed with those qualifications.
