Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Agreed. If the mods had said "Okay, you need to be around from the 13th through the 15th during these set hours each day (like 5-8pm EST or whatever), we're cramming in the event during those days and times" and specifically had gotten people who would be around during that window of availability, I think it would have gone better. Instead it's now the 18th and this event is still going on.

For comparison, the last event went on for nine OOC days, but it didn't feel as long as this event feels. It's entirely because the last event was well-organized, and the plotty stuff was split up into three groups, so no one person had to be involved for all nine days. And the people not in whatever group for that IC day had some interesting stuff to do too, so they weren't just waiting around for the group of that day to finish what they were doing.

ayrt Yeah. That still would have made it hard for people in wildly different timezones to participate fully but not everyone can be a part of every event anyway, and I expected the one year anniversary to be pretty intense in terms of impact and participation.

If nothing else I'm getting a lot of backtagging done while my character is puking. Probably a bit rough on the new-this-month players to be cut off from the network for a third of the month without much to do though.

didn't they do something similar though? i don't think they were as specific as saying which hours people needed to be available but i distinctly remember them saying people needed to be readily available during these days and even advising someone not to sign up if they couldn't be around to reply quickly during the event. it's why i didn't sign up, for example, because i knew i'd be at work during a big chunk of things.

like... yeah it's dragging and i'm a little bored topside myself but it is kind of unfair to act like this is all on the mods when they did make a point of saying anyone who signed up needed to be available and some people who signed up weren't.

da "Please make sure you will be available to RP during the event if you sign up. We're not asking for 24/7 availability, but you will need to be active." - is all they said about availability. Nik, the player who asked about signing up and was told not to, was on hiatus until yesterday and said she would have spotty activity even when she got back.

Everyone who signed up that I have seen has been available and active on plurk for several hours each day. They didn't sign up and flake out. The problem we are discussing is that they are active at reasonable hours in their own time zones, which are different from Mel's and each others' even within groups. This could have been avoided had the mods been clearer what their activity expectations were. Saying so is not an attack.

i'm not saying that it's an attack, i'm just saying that this isn't a clear-cut "mods are the only ones in the wrong here" situation. the mods' timezones are clearly listed on the mod contact page and have been since i joined months ago (i can't say from the beginning since i didn't look prior to when i joined). the mods have also been on plurk for hours to cover incoming questions and answers during the event that i've seen, event at unreasonable hours during their own timezones.

as someone who has a very similar work schedule to some of the people who signed up and have been slower in submitting responses i just think it's a little shortsighted not to examine the players' contributions to this going slowly, too. not everyone is going to know that their work schedule will or won't allow them a certain amount of free time during the day, but when you know that it's going to leave you unavailable for a large chunk of the day during the times when others in the game will be around, maybe don't sign up for a time sensitive event? or leave behind guidelines for how your character would respond so your groupmates can work on responses in your absence, i saw some people do that and it worked out fine for them.

there's room for improvement on both sides but situations like this won't improve moving forward unless both sides actually admit they need to improve. the mods being more specific about the exact times that will be best to work with is a good suggestion but the players also need to be more honest with themselves and others about whether or not they'll be available for a time-sensitive event. it sucks to sit out of things (i know this firsthand as i'm doing it myself) but i also know that i would have been one of the people slowing things down if i had signed up, so i didn't.

Some of the players who I've seen struggling are in US time zones and have been struggling because they've been at work all day. I've seen more than one instance of players who signed up not being on until night time, even in their time zone. So, no, not everyone has been active for the event at reasonable hours. It would have been helpful to have a more specific time frame for availability, but no matter what time zone you're in, it's not a good idea to sign up for a time-sensitive event if you can only be around for a few hours during the night.

ngl I kind of hope the mods say something about that then, either to the game in general or to the players who signed up but have not been available. Signups were literally three days before the event started, at that point they should have known if they would have been available or not on the days in question.

i hope so too but i highly doubt that they will. the other anon i'm talking to did have a point about it being helpful for them to be more specific about the exact times that are best for responses, but i don't think the mods pointing out that it would also be helpful for players to be more honest about whether or not their availability leaves them open enough to respond in a timely fashion is going to go over well with anyone.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-19 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
i think it might have been helpful if the mods would've specified how much they needed people to be around for and for how long. the sign up was pretty vague.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-19 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It was very vague and that has a lot to do with it. The players have been very active and have coordinated well with each other regardless. If the playerbase didn't adapt so well good chances this event might have failed.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-19 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I think more specifics would have been helpful. So far, it seems like everything is going up early in the day EST. There's no way everyone can be online all day for nine days straight, not even taking timezones into account. The vast majority of people work during the day, or, in the case of other timezones, need to be in bed for work the next morning while their group members are up and around. There really was no way to predict this from what the mods said on the sign up. They just said that anyone who signed up needed to be available, not that this would be a time sensitive event. I'm sure a lot of people assumed that it meant they'd need to be available to tag or boomerang, like with the dreaming event, not that lagging behind at all could mean their group comes in last like this.
