Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

idk, "you don’t make jokes about smashing pickles in a trans issues episode, it’s in really poor taste" cracks me up so I can't regret reading that

- Don't read your game's anoncomm threads. Just don't fucking do it.

- The game is inevitably going to evolve from your initial vision of it. Be honest with yourself about whether changes truly need to be nipped in the bud before they break something, or if you're just too attached. RPing is a collaborative exercise, which involves ceding some control.

- Set up the mechanics of your game (how much NPC interaction there is, how much list maintenance you have to do, how much metaplot you have to keep track of, etc.) so that you can handle stuff adequately if not brilliantly during a bad stretch of RL, not just when everything's going fine and you're full of energy.

- There are going to be recurring administrative tasks, like checking questions on the FAQ and updating the taken list. Set aside 15 minutes a day, every day, and do them. Like doing dishes, it never takes as long as you think, unless you let it get out of control, which invariably starts with "eh, I'll do it tomorrow." This doesn't include genuine reasons to skip it like illness or a flat tire or whatever. Just don't let laziness screw you.

- Related to the above, if you need to think about it/consult co-mods/have discovered your house is on actual fire, reply to people letting them know what's up and that an answer's going to take a little while, so they don't think they've been ignored.

- Do not ever, EVER answer mod questions in your personal plurk. If you let players start doing that, it will never stop.

- Assume good faith until demonstrated otherwise. You can't read minds and neither can your co-mods/players. Generally people's worst sin is just being a bit self-centered and obtuse, which gets frustrating when you're dealing with the 10th BUT GOKU NEEDS TO BE ABLE TO GO SUPER-SAIYAN argument of the week, but players aren't doing it personally to screw with you (generally.)

- When someone does demonstrate bad faith, you don't need to be the goddamn Batman about it. Walking the line between pushover and I AM JUSTICE requires you to be level-headed, so just be aware of the entirely normal tendency to want to retaliate when someone's being a genuine fuckhead. Think about consequences not in terms of punishing the offender, but of ensuring the game is enjoyable and reasonably safe for other players.

- Don't mod angry. If you have a decision you need to make and players are screaming about how everything is ruined forever because no one in this hobby has any chill, go take a break and do something that has nothing to do with your game. Come back and do your modwork when your sense of scale has reasserted itself. There is absolutely nothing in RP so crucial it can't wait an hour.

tl;dr have realistic expectations and touch some fucking grass on a regular basis

actually the CN publicity management said that.

the writers have come out on record that there was no trans message at all meant to be and it was stunt done by execs to try and get people into the show

Depends where you hang. Sam gets shittalked in some circles constantly for the great sin of not being Rich Rider. (But nobody ever manages to give a more solid reason as to why he sucks than "he's not Rich," of course.)

oh yeah, absolutely, and also being associated with loeb, but he doesn't get subject to the same level of criticism from Comic Book Guys that Kamala and Miles do, especially Kamala, which was the whole point.

i haven't been on here in 3 years. something reminded me of a character i used to play at Sirens Pull and nostalgia brought me here.

I don't know ANY of the games in the discussion thread! which one is the big new one that everyone is either apping to or hating on? back in my day it was Asgard something. Anyone remember that?

which is the sex game now? What happened to amat omnes?

exsilium? zodion? exit void? :o

(Anonymous) 2016-07-02 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
it's not new, but ryslig is huge and everyone in it apparently hates it

the sex game is tara or carvanka, I think tara is bigger

(Anonymous) 2016-07-02 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
amat closed, like, yesterday. that's not an exaggeration, it literally closed within the last week.

they were disappointingly unwanky about it, too. boo.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/peruse-usage

Peruse is a contronym and has been for a while. Unless you're fuming because its usage evolved over the years? I know that happens with word definitions.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-02 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
exsilium closed up shop because they asked for new mods and literally nobody in the playerbase stepped up

i'm sure there's more in other wg/rpanons posts around that time but that's when it was announced

(Anonymous) 2016-07-02 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
wow i went back and read some ryslig threads. i feel kind of bad for the mods except they don't seem to care

(Anonymous) 2016-07-02 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
omg. weird coincidence!

you'd think a sex rp would die with a little goodbye wank

(Anonymous) 2016-07-02 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
aw thanks for the reading material, i played there really briefly so this is interesting

no problem! it was fascinating to watch as it went down, because it went from being one of the biggest presences in dwrp to nothing in seconds flat.

if anything, feel bad for the mods that aren't our head mod. many of us suspect they get very little say in what does or doesn't happen in the game.

tbh i understand why it went this way

if negotiations had won, then the away team of like, what 10 people? would get to do a fun thing while the rest of the game sits on their hands watching

doing exactly nothing themselves

fun shit

Phone sex. I like the idea of A calling B with the intention of getting off while they chat, A thinking B has no idea, but B is completely aware of what they're doing and subtly choosing their words to help them out (and getting off, as well, of course). Can be m/m, f/f, or m/f. I play from drawn mediums and would prefer to play against the same, though it's not a dealbreaker. No underage characters, please! I'm fine playing either side of the above, or discussing a totally different angle. PM me at ~anongoat if you're interested and we can talk characters.

Some things I learned after modding three games:

Plan ahead. Plan 6 months of your game plot in advance and have the posts written up and ready to go. Depending on how plot-heavy your game is, make sure that you always stay well ahead and that you have a game plan in mind. You can adjust to player actions as you go but having that foundation in place will keep you on track.

Be realistic about the amount of admin and other mod work that you can do. Don't play a million NPCs when you're trying to juggle everything else. If you create an unnecessarily complicated system that creates more work than it adds value, ditch it.

If you have co-mods, make sure that everyone knows what they're responsible for. It's more efficient to divide mod work up, but at the same time try to avoid bottlenecks where if one mod goes awol nothing can get done. Always have a back-up, especially for events or other time-sensitive things. Make sure all mods know and agree in advance that they need to pull their weight and that if they can't be around enough to do that, they need to step down. The only thing worse than a mod who is never around is a mod who actively causes a headache for the rest of the team. Choose your co-mods carefully, a bad one can wreck a game.

Keep your promises. Post events on time. Process applications on time. Answer questions in a timely fashion. You need to keep up with and show enthusiasm for your game. Make the effort to build the trust of your players. Reliability is important.

Give players the opportunity to feedback on the game in an open forum. Actively encourage this and show that you're willing to listen. That doesn't mean you have to do everything that players want. It's your game and you know what tone you're going for and what does and doesn't fit with the game. But do listen when players have good ideas or bring up legitimate concerns, and then tell everyone when you've implemented player feedback. Always explain the rationale behind any changes that you make and especially point out when it's a result of player feedback. Players are far more likely to accept change if they feel like they've had an influence and if they know that you have a solid reason for doing it.

Finally, accept that there are things you have no control over. You have no control over what is said on anon comms. Accept that players will vent and there's nothing you can do about this other than try not to give them much to complain about. You have no control over who apps and drops from your game, other than filtering the players that do app. Don't be tempted to be too lenient with applications, you'll only regret it later on. Focus on having fun with the players you do have and with a bit of luck, they'll do all the enabling for you and your game will find its feet. There's no magic formula for a game surviving, but at least you can give it your best shot!
