people are so weird about spiders. if your phobia is so bad you can't even see a picture of one of the most common animals in the world, it's on you to work on overcoming that

as a wildlife rehabilitator you lose your patience for this nonsense early on in your career

there's an element of childish helplessness at acting like creatures you could crush with your bare hands are some sort of thirsty blood killers

it doesn't happen with just spiders it also happens with snakes and other insects and it's so disheartening trying to educate people as to why we don't kill all the rat snakes if we don't want mice or why their yard is full of mosquitoes because they keep spraying and killing their jumping and wolf spiders

like to way too many people anything that isn't as cute as a heckin doggo needs to be eradicated and at first i had sympathy for it but given we're living through an insect extinction of sorts i cannot be fucked anymore

anon you understand that phobias aren't rational right? some people are so scared of balloons they can't even be in a room with them. saying "the spider won't hurt you" won't stop someone being scared if they have a legit phobia. it takes a lot of therapy to get over it. don't be an asshole to people who 100% can't help what they're feeling.

'sorry i have a phobia' has been something someone told me straight to my face as they crushed a spider in front of me while i was trying to usher it into a paper cup

I feel like this was less of a “rahhh arachnophobes” issue and more of a you being around assholes/potential sociopaths issue

There’s no rational reason for my cousin to chimp out at the sight of clowns but she loses her mind, it isn’t a logic thing. I feel like a genuine arachnophobe isn’t going to want to even be near a spider actually

not being able to empathize with a person right in front of you who is suffering and frightened because you care more about the spider says more about you than it does about them. legitimately you probably should work on your social skills if this is an attitude you have regularly, it's not healthy.

fun fact science has no answer as to why people have these phobias

some people think it's genetic as some spiders (and snakes) are venomous

but there's cultures were these animals are eaten and venerated so obviously biology is not the whole picture. babies are also not naturally afraid of spiders

another popular running theory is that it's societal, i.e. people learn to fear these animals because others said they should

but it also doesn't explain some reactions people have towards

regardless the only solution to the problem is...exposure therapy

and a fictional spider is probably an easier (and cheaper) place to start than paying thousands of dollars for a licensed counselor/psychologist to slowly introduce you to spiders

Honest q: how do you feel about people killing house spiders in areas that have unobtrusive but potentially dangerous ones

I live in an area with brown recluses and I ignore spiders in my house 90% of the time, but the little brown ones I err on the side of caution with even if I hate killing then. Obviously the black widows and shit are easy to ID and I leave them alone unless they’re literally colonizing the front siding of my house again

Outside spiders are cool and fine and doing their job, and I try to catch spooky leggy bathroom buds and relocate them

i can never tell if those fuckers are grass spiders (harmless) or recluses (less harmless)

i also hate that spider id guides are always like "the difference is in this tiny detail on the underside of the thorax" as if i'm getting close enough to one to look for that

just stay out of my house please! there shouldn't even be anything in here for you to eat

At least the widows and wolf spiders stay outside to fight the junebug legions. The goddamn brown recluses act like they pay rent

I have less enmity towards the spooky drain spiders (they fucking manifest in the bathroom downstairs with no windows so I assume they’re drain spiders) but I still wish they just wouldn’t. They act like they can take me in a fight and they’re probably correct

we recommend calling an exterminator in particularly egregious cases

i'm not going to lose my mind about someone german cockroaches for similar reasons

we use a handheld vacuum on the lowest setting to catch dangerous bugs at my place of work

effective, doesn't kill the animal, prevents you from getting your hands near them

for snakes we use these and we put them in buckets with security caps

it is, and i am working on it, but in the meantime i would love to not see pictures that will upset me, even if hopefully in the future they would upset me less or not at all. like don't get me wrong, anyone who throws an actual fit over this is being a weird baby, but i think it's normal and fine to be privately upset when you get your phobia triggered and it will happen even if you're actively working on getting rid of it
