Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.
Discussion of or soliciting RP for celebrities or other non-fictionalized versions of real people is not allowed.

this is a general question and more of an ongoing thought i've been having that i'm interested in discussing/hearing other answers and thoughts

i've picked up a character who is quite religious (attends services and says prayers in canon, though doesn't live completely by his religion) and i don't share that religion. i've been doing research and making sure to be as sensitive and realistic as possible about his religious practice, but i'm still concerned that it's possible i might offend people who do share his religion if i write things incorrectly or make assumptions. if you've done this, how have you handled it? is there anything i can do or look out for to make sure i'm ic but also being aware of the sensitivities of the subject?

Let me guess, you're picking up Matt Murdock or Nightcrawler?

Even if not, honestly, ask around your RP buddies and see if anyone shares that religion! Or even just here on rpanons. As an example that is close to home, I'm a Catholic myself on about what you might say Matt's level is, the whole going to church every Sunday and saying prayers thing, and if someone asked me for my input since his religion is so intertwined with his personality, I'd be happy to give them some pointers, some subtleties they might not pick up (praying to saints versus praying to God being one I've had people IRL get confused on that I've talked about them with), or just helpfully correct any mistakes they might have initially made. Don't be shy to ask even the most mundane questions like "Do you cross yourself as soon as you enter church? Or only after you dip your hand in the holy water?"

One thing I will say do your research on is look to see how that religion's stance on current event subjects might have changed. For example, the Catholic Church and its members have changed a LOT since I was a kid regarding their stance on things like homosexuality, which is something that character would be aware of. Another thing is that oftentimes religion can be a culture thing too, so being "culturally Catholic" can often affect things in Irish or Latino communities such as weddings, funerals, or even customs that they'll have on holidays. There can also be little in-jokes that people from that religion will enjoy like the meme my sister recently sent me which said "I'm culturally Catholic, which means I enjoy funny little statues and stained glass windows."

If anyone wants to bite your head off for accidentally making mistakes, that honestly says more about them having thin skin then you making an earnest effort to try to learn and be sensitive.
