Rundown: rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

if you're having a conversation IRL you can hear a person's tone of voice or the look on their face. are they smiling or frowning? they ONLY got dialogue, nothing else. when someone gives you only dialogue it's like getting a text message. i don't think they're expecting every tag to set the scene, but some basic information about how the dialogue is delivered would be helpful.

how are you supposed to think about your character'a impulses if you don't know what the other character is doing? sure, i can assume the other character is sitting there like a cardboard cutout but that doesn't make me want to continue the thread either.

Even when I'm talking to someone at my most unaware I'm clocking their movement, tone, etc.

i thought I mentioned in the comment you replied to gathering the information from their face; i.e. the chosen icon, a la ecats, but I guess I didnt say so explicitly because I assumed people reading this would assume that icons are involved. So you would be gathering all that information from the icon use and use of emphasis in the dialogue.

many players have long, entertaining threads this way, so it still comes down to style mismatch vs a certain style being shit.

da but there are a lot of times where you're having conversations IRL and there AREN'T many changes in a person's tone or facial expression. like, i was just out drinking with some friends yesterday and we were all just shooting the shit casually and no one was really making any notable expressions or changing their tone all that much because the conversation simply wasn't that deep to warrant that kind of thing.
