Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.

newbie question: would it be correct to assume that whatever stuff goes in to [brackets] is all ooc knowledge/commentary?

so if a reply to me comes with a bunch of the other character's worldbuilding info in brackets, all of that is for me the player to know and not my character. my character shouldn't respond to that info ic-ly because that would be metagaming, but it's fine for me to react to that info via brackets of my own. is that how it works?

ic knowledge, not ooc. it'd be like someone commenting that they were afraid of spiders, but this person couldn't know that, even if they stepped just under a spider web and the other person had flinched. it can also be stuff to let the other person pick up on things, a way to give the player info to tell them things they might notice, like an accent, a scent, or supernatural related things if they come up. one supernatural might notice another whereas a human might not.

some people like to pepper introspection text with a lot of background narrative, like the character they're talking to reminding them of someone from their past, or the topic they're discussing being uncomfortable for (x) reasons or bringing back memories.

if there's something to react to, like your character is a werewolf and the other character is a vampire, mentioning things like scent/vibes would give the other character something to pick up on, eg; "Sam stood there, talking to the other man, hoping that he didn't pick up on the fact that he'd shifted in the last week and might still carry a scent of wolf on him. Maybe he'd not notice and brush it off as him owning a dog." stuff like that.

then yeah your character wouldn't know anything in the brackets, it's just flavor text

some people are cool with you using it to prompt your own introspection but others think that's weird, it's just a style difference

yeah that should be fine. sometimes they also use it as a way for you to find cues that you couldn't from pure dialogue. like if they have a wistful look on their face from a memory, or a darkening of their expression from their perceived intent in your character's words. those usually are things people add in case your character is able to perceive or guess a direction from their own experiences.

This. It especially works for characters who use have physical tells for how they're feeling rather than saying it. Like,


No, I couldn't possibly kiss you.

[But Jonathan couldn't hide the way he blushed when the count looked at him, nor could he disguise how his heart raced when in his presence.]


So the Dracula player, in this scenario, would reasonably be able to tell that Jonathan, the character, is lying, and could react accordingly.
