Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.
Discussion of or soliciting RP for celebrities or other non-fictionalized versions of real people is not allowed.

Nothing humbles me more than noticing someone whose writing I consider mediocre boomeranging while my inbox is empty all day. I don’t resent them for having fun, but it’s a little sad to sit alone with my Barbies.

i don't mean this in a rude or 'gotcha!' way, but it might be time to start considering if the way you value 'quality' of writing over other aspects is standing in the way of your rp, if you're able to make comparisons with other people like that

i'd much rather spend my time boomeranging someone i find fun. sometimes someone whose writing is a little more mediocre is more fun to tag with than someone whose writing is better because they're more creative about spitballing ideas for threads, better at "yes, and" or "no, but," a more consistent tagger, better at giving hooks, etc.

give me someone who is 'mediocre' but fun any day of the week.

i get where you're coming from, but i think it's also down to what op targets in their rp. if they're looking for someone who challenges them, writing-wise, then they won't really get their itch scratched by what they'd perceive as settling, purely to rake in the tag count.

that said, op, if your objective is interacting with better writers and seeking out challenge or improvement on that end, i'm afraid you'll need to make your peace early with some days of inbox hunger. most people in the hobby approach rp writing casually and will naturally gravitate more toward individuals who can reciprocate immediate fun at the end of a hard work day, rather than the purity of the writing exercise. i'm not saying any side is wrong, just that, statistically, there will be more people in the 'fun rp > writing quality' camp.

you need to remember comparison is the thief of joy, and while the person you see as a more mediocre writer is bursting at the seams with tags, they might not be the kind of tags that satisfy you.

you will also find a not insignificant chunk of rpers who keep things casual with strangers/new CR but will put in strong effort and meatier tags after establishing rapport with a character or player

Been burned too many times. Had one new CR recently that barely read my Serious Writing tag and kept replying with barely on topic dialogue.

I have limited time to tag and I'd prefer to know if my CR is reliable/trustworthy before I put extra work into it.

There's someone I've RPed with for nearly a decade now because they match my effort by reading what I actually wrote and communicate with me. Both of these things are bars 90% of RPers cannot clear.

Doesn't sound rude, no worries! I realize it's reflective of my own critical standards, and I think it's fair that there are often tradeoffs for speed/quality/number of tags. I struggle to enjoy tags that feature a noticeable amount of syntax/grammatical/spelling errors, which is often something that affects my valuation of someone's writing more than nearly anything else. I can appreciate the idea behind a tag and the collaborative element of RP, but it kills a lot of my fun when my brain is making corrections while I read.

It's entirely a me-problem, and like I said, I don't resent people for having fun where they do. It just reminds me to cool my jets anytime I feel any type of up-my-own-ass way about the quality of my own writing – in either direction. Plenty of people probably find my writing mediocre and boring, and that's just reality. All I can do is my best to write fun tags for the people who want to play with me and be open to improvement or feedback. I'm not going to be everybody's favorite thread partner, and that's okay.

you didn't ask for advice so feel free to throw this out the window, but I also used to be super stringent about that kind of thing many years ago and what helped me was honestly exposure. The more I just kind of dealt with it, the easier I found it was to find what was strong about their writing if grammar/spelling wasn't it. like, maybe the syntax isn't always great, but the character voice was strong, or they always had good ideas, or they always kept the thread moving. Over time playing with a wide variety of players made it easier for me to enjoy things like that and also helped me learn what I could improve for myself since I'm pretty solid on spelling.

buuuut you also can't always force yourself, so I'm glad you also recognize that it doesn't make you a bad player, either. It'd be fun if you could learn to enjoy all of that because then you'd have a bigger pool to play with, but it's also fine if you don't! I hope you get more tags than you expect soon either way. thanks for not taking what I said poorly!
