Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.
Discussion of or soliciting RP for celebrities or other non-fictionalized versions of real people is not allowed.

I'm somewhat new here, so apologies if this is actually a dumb question.

What is generally the etiquette regarding top levelling on memes with "problematic" (I hate the term but I can't think of a different catch-all) character? (Like, there are dead dove themes involving them in their canon.) I don't think these aspects would show up much, if at all, in any cross canon threads, but they're still there in the canon/character.

I assume it's best to avoid tagging out because I wouldn't want to make anyone uncomfortable (and I very rarely see any dnws/limits on memes), but would posting top levels be okay? Should I warn in a vague, or specific way in my comment? (This could also be a spoiler issue depending on the specifics.)

Thanks for your help! I tend to worry about overstepping or making people uncomfortable in public rp settings.

hey, no worries! i would make an opt out post with all the content warnings listed clearly and link to it in your top levels. if your top level says "cws here" and your opt out post says "this character is a rapist, i don't think it will come up in threads" (just an example, but this is the level of specificity i would aim for), then if someone doesn't want to thread with characters who are rapists then they now have all the information they need to make that decision. i don't think you need to warn in the top level itself at all, i think the information that there are cws at all is enough for a tl and asking people to click through one time to see details is reasonable.

it depends in what respect they're problematic — dwrp is generally quite chill with problematic characters, and ime the exceptions are characters that are essentially walking CWs (eg. marvel's killgrave/the purple man). if it's mostly the fact that there's unpleasantness in the character's canon/backstory, I'd link to an info post (that contains a list of applicable CW), and an opt-out post (both for the character in their entirety, and any canonical themes in part) within my top levels and when tagging out.

just check the preferences of any characters before you tag them, and you should be gravy.

my main is a character who is quote-unquote problematic, but have never had any issues with him using the above approach.

This is good to know, thank you! I didn't consider making posts like this but it sounds like the best idea.

I've seen a lot of characters who just have empty accounts with no posts though, so checking preferences isn't always possible but as long as I have my own opt out it should be okay?

ime it depends entirely on 1) what the problematic stuff is, and 2) whether it's likely to ever come up in the average thread. for instance, i've played a character who had SA in their background, and to date it's only ever come up in three threads i've done with them (one with a castmate who was already well aware of it existing in canon and the other two times with my character's partner, who had also been warned about it). i never put any sort of warnings in top levels for them because the chances of it ever coming up outside of very specific situations with people they had a deep level of trust with were basically nil.

I don't think it has much of a chance to come up in the average thread at all unless my character were talking to someone from their canon, in which case I'd assume they would know what they're in for lmao.

The "problematic" aspect in question is incest, and on one hand I know people play from GoT for example, but it's also a subject that can easily be upsetting to people.

Thanks anon!

Hi! Incest is a trigger for me so I thought I could help answer here as someone who that would be a problem for.

I would do what other people recommended and put on your journal the content warnings, and then when you top level your character you can link to it. I would put like

"Rhaenyra Targaryen | House of the Dragon (subject line)

[Please see content warnings (link) here before responding, thank you!]"

If I was tagging out I would probably reply to someone with

"Hello interested in some cross-canon? I have content warnings here (link)."

That way you've covered your bases and if the person doesn't click your link they truly cannot be against it later. But it gives them a head's up and if they're good with it, no big deal.

On your content warning post I'd just say something like "My character has canon incest in their content but I will not bring it up in threads unless discussed beforehand or it may never come up" and that's fine.

That would be my recommendation! Hope you enjoy playing, op, thanks for putting consideration into this.

I agree with this and would also suggest that, in addition to listing the relevant CWs, you make it clear somewhere how exactly the character was involved. Some people might want to avoid any character whose backstory includes SA or drug use or whatever, regardless of their role in it, but for others it definitely makes a difference whether your character was the one (for example) committing the violence versus having been the target.
