rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

pretty sure it's both and that's the entire confusion. i'm not in the game but the impression i got was that some people rp on discord and post the finished log to the comm

also not in the game, but you can't be surprised people find that weird. that people are playing on discord and it's being c/p'd after the fact for 'storage' on dw?

as someone who played on ljrp, this is exactly what people would do with AIM RP. there’d be three game communities - one for in character RP, another for network posts, and then there’d be a third log community. it definitely fell out of favor towards the late 2000s as people just stopped using AIM.

Maybe that happened in your games but not a lot of them. Even during ljrp days posting chat logs on comms was seen as trashy.

in oc games on ljrp this was pretty common, anyway. not so much in panfandom.

i remember this happening in multiple games like paradisa and such so imo the 'trashy' thing is just you i think.

falling out of favor is absolutely the key here - not that we didn't used to do it with AIM and LJ 20 years ago, but that on the whole we don't do that here on DW in 2025 anymore. it's not typical, standard, or expected, which is probably why some players here would find it odd and off-putting. and tbh I do too, I wouldn't want to go back to that format.

I have no feelings on this whatsoever and find it fascinating that some people do. I can see from a mod perspective some disadvantages, and it's a valid personal preference for your threads, but why would it be off-putting if other people did it for threads/interactions you weren't a part of?

nayrt but it puts pressure on players to have and use discord or risk being left out of certain avenues of cr. if a large portion of the game prefers to do their threading on discord and you don't want to, you're going to be left out of cr and plot opportunities. that's pretty offputting to me because people shouldn't be expected to have to use a completely separate platform in order to be able to play in a game that's supposed to be on dw.

there's a reason all of the games i'm in tell players that plotting should be done on the ooc comm and not in the game discord so that people who don't want to be in the game discord don't get left out of things.

What are your feelings on Plurk?

I totally get it if the thought process of it is 'it's a DW game, everything should be on DW'

Because when I join a game on DW the expectation is that the game will be played in DW. That the plotting will be done in DW. That the RPing itself will be done in DW. I hate Discord, it's an archival mess: its search function sucks, you can't pull up logs by unique URL, username, etc. So if a game advertised itself as DW but a significant portion of it was done in Discord? I'd feel lied to.

I was asking about posting logs that were written elsewhere on DW. Sorry if that wasn't clear!

Curious how you feel about Plurk, now, though. A lot of games have almost all plotting done on Plurk and if you're not active on Plurk, you're shut out of a lot of the game.

this is actually VERY common on IJ and how most people do logs. they play them in gdocs and then post the finished product on the logs comm.

before journal games were a thing, lj was used as log storage for scenes from MU*s, so no i think this is extremely normal

like i don't think an all discord rp should be on the masterlist either (the point was that it isn't actually all discord and people need to understand nuance i guess, it's possible to play in more places than one) but i don't think that using dw as log storage is even a little bit weird.

i tried to rp on discord and found it impossible because discord's search function is shit. god forbid you lose a tag. going back to re-read tags was a nightmare. i like dw because every reply has its own url. good luck finding the unique message id for a tag in discord, then even more luck being able to do a damn thing with that info.

people can rp in more than one place for the same continuity, that's not actually weird it's just unusual in the more recent crop of dw games. it used to be common even here, especially in oc games, which while under-represented still do exist

da but it's disingenuous to call it a dw game in that case if the expectation is that part of the rping is going to be done elsewhere. someone who doesn't want to join a game discord or add people from the game on discord isn't going to be able to participate in large chunks of the game, whereas with a regular dw game you can get along just fine without having discord at all.

if you truly cant get your brain around "thing done in one place but this guy does it somewhere else and still thinks hes like everybody else" then idk what to tell you
