Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

Another visually impaired anon here who agrees that the commitment to aesthetics over accessibility sucks for us, but most of DWRP cares at least as much about visuals as writing so it isn't going to change.

In addition to what other anon mentioned, there are browser settings that can specify a minimum font-size. This way, any text rendered under that size will be automatically sized up. Now, this does make things ugly and breaks a lot of people's pretty layouts so it's pretty much only usable on the generic comment page, but it might help so you don't have to use zoom software or zoom the page itself so much that the layout breaks and the text itself is half an inch wide.

I've also found that once I start tagging with someone and we go back and forth a few times, they're usually pretty amenable to changing anything that makes my eyes unhappy.

da who has font size increased on entire OS and browser on auto zoom

sorry about breaking everyone's lovely layouts but a bitch gotta see

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
confession: i don't understand why it's considered to about aesthetics?

people in this thread are making fun of *this* and ::this:: and {}this{} but [this] is exactly the same. it looks the same amount of ugly, people are just more used to [this].

i think i hate the bolded parenthesis the most. they're so distracting. "Just do this," says anon. "We already have real punctuation that does what brackets do without annoying yourself with coding or anyone else with small text being hard to read. They're called quotations. You can use any tense you want."

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
don't wanna

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
fishing through quotations in paragraphs isn't without it's drawbacks.

"You can always format it like this," said anon, elaborating and typing much more than intended for effect,

"but when starting another phrase, it's best to also begin another paragraph for readability."

It can also lead to people trying to replace 'said anon' with the entire thesaurus entry for 'said', so some folks just like to skip that in favor of brackets.

ymmv for everything. some people just really like the way certain brackets look even though they look ugly to you. not everyone feels the same way as you do.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
can't speak for anyone else, but i actually do find brackets and small-sized text easier to digest because of formatting. to my eye —

Just do this.

[ Anon did what anon does in the way most becoming of anon, heart wrenched with the pathos of anon, tone anonymous. ]

We already have real punctuation...

— helps me parse text quicker because of how distinctly separate and easily identifiable the dialogue and prose are. but i struggle with navigating large chunks of text generally.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
this. idk. i enjoy prose in books, but don't wanna look at it here. my eyes glaze over and i scroll away

i haven't written or read a prose tag in years

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
for me, i find it slightly easier to read prose tags (or fic or novels) on my phone, rather than on my laptop. maybe worth trying if you see a difference, anon!

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
appreciate the suggestion, but don't really wanna

i love the look of a firm bracket

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
that's totally valid! i was thinking more if it also helps you with reading non-rp stuff, i found a slight difference. sadly not a game-changing one, a physical book is still best for bulky text for me.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-23 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see breaking it into more lines helping, and I could take or leave brackets, but I hate the small text.

for me, I almost skim the action and have to go back to it. making it small basically turns it into "fine print" and my brain says "that's not important, skip it".

i knew this would trigger the illiterates in the writing hobby but i posted it anyway. don't know why

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
damn no one else was being mean, you didn't have to be

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"the illiterates" lmfao im sorry, are we cramping on that superiority complex you're trying to tout on an anoncomm for playing internet barbies rn

get it together

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
i probably write better than you, bbdoll

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
no one was being triggered, my guy, we were just explaining that, for some of us, this specific formatting can help with parsing and legibility. it's not always about aesthetics. for some folks, it's a symptom associated with dyslexia, where your eyes simply 'skim' over walls of text.

if putting other people down makes you feel better about yourself, go ahead, though.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
da

if you think anyone is Triggered then youre just as if not more illiterate than the illiterates, anon

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
man i prefer prose to brackets as well but come on now

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
ppl like ayrt are why some people think only snobbish "this is a literate rp" types would ask for prose over brackets

like gee thanks, really helping to sell the appeal of prose here chief

(Anonymous) 2025-01-16 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
you seem like the type of person to assume people may not be threading with you because you use prose rather than because you're kinda unpleasant
