Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

this probably isn't the right thread but w/e

say hypothetically someone was interested in potentially getting into heaven official's blessing... where on earth do you start with that. what all are the different adaptations and their relation to one another. from a roleplay perspective, how much of the canon would one be looking to digest to feel like they're 'ready'

I think the best thing to do would be to read the novel. Seven Seas has released the whole translation now, it's solid, and it's a really good book (I don't play from it and I'm not a danmei person really, I just had a blast reading it.)

The anime only covers the first 10-20% of the novel; not sure how much the audio drama covers but I've heard the translation is a little stilted.

Of course, if you are someone who prefers to be able to watch or listen to something, those mediums are there to help you get used to distinguishing the characters and investing in the setting. But it sounds like you're already interested!

I personally feel like you should read the entire book if you want to play one of the main handful of characters. It's a completed novel, not an ongoing serial. If you are being enabled into a side character from one specific arc you could maybe just read those bits, but even then you'd want to be familiar with danmei logic and culture, maybe read some tumblr meta.

thank you, anon! as a primarily video game rper, written and unspoken is a combo that's a bit daunting for my tiny little undiagnosed-with-something-for-sure brain. i might look into casually watching the anime in my spare time before diving into the novel for the Real Experience (TM).

around how long a read would you say it is? should i bust out a notepad as i go if this is my first major foray into danmei?

I'd start with the donghua (animation) and watch the first season or so. It can especially help with establishing a look-feel for the characters and the world for your brain to build off of, and if you're hooked by the world and characters, move onto the novels and either read from the top or from where the first season leaves off. Like above anon I'd really recommend reading the books bc they come with a lot of annotations to explain bits of danmei/worldbuilding lore and complicated emotional beats that are harder for a visual medium to depict.

hi anon! there's also an audio book on spotify based on the unofficial translation of tgcf (just search tgcf audiobook). it's pretty good but definitely fanmade. I do recommend watching the donghua first and if that hooks you, read the books, but audio can help with the transition from visual to written.

as for feeling ready, while the personalities are present from the beginning, there's a lot of lore and history for the main characters you don't get until later on in the book, so reading all of it is probably the best idea, depending on what you focus on in RP. while the history won't necessarily change how you play them, it does provide a lot of understanding and as other anons mentioned, there is a lot of worldbuilding for the cultivation stuff. but there are other characters who have distinct arcs that can be picked up a little easier.

i personally found the beginning very boring so i skipped ahead to where the first season of the donghua left off, and then skimmed quite a bit, but it really does pick up, and a lot of the characters and arcs are really good. (and once i went back and read the official translation, it was easier to read, simply because i was more familiar with everything and enjoyed the characters more.)

i'd go with the novels, now fully translated. as a word of caution: heaven official's blessing was first released on a pay-per-chapter basis, and it shows. it's bloated with side characters and stories that sometimes add to the main plot and sometimes are clearly only there because the author fell in love with this one peripheral character or wanted to cash in. i'd factor whether you have patience for that kind of thing before starting this particular title, since, at eight books, it's not the cheapest series to embark on.

I can be more specific if there's a personality type you'd like too, but here's some of my favorites.

Mini Arai from Butterfly Storage

Batuque has several.

Captain Mizuki from One Punch Man.

Michelle Roadrunner from Origin

Caulifla and/or Kale from Dragon Ball Super

Majo Taisen is a series about famous women from history fighting a tournament and most of them are given a fighter's figure.

Every version of She-Hulk out there.

Carol Kincaid from OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes

Leverage! Fun LA show about a group of thieves who are pulling Robin Hood style heists to help people out that the law can't or won't. Has at least one fight scene per episode if not more and the chemistry between the cast is fantastic. Also a very good mix of light fun moments tempered with sad heavy ones, especially as we learn more about the characters' backgrounds.

I wanted to say Animorphs but that's a bit heavy on the sad side of things. The books are a great time but yeah ultimately a treatise on how much war sucks so. You know.

From osmosis if you're not opposed to cartoons, I think Digimon might fit the bill. Maybe also In Stars and Time?

IDK how strict you're being about that 'group of friends' bit, as in group of friends prior to the adventure or becoming friends during it, but Mass Effect Legendary Edition.

man, I wish One Piece was nearly done because that would be right up your alley, but I guarantee Oda is going to take another ten years and even if you catch up slowly, you'll still catch up.

- golden kamuy - the core of the story is the two protagonists (an adult guy and a teenage girl) who are partners in crime (not literally, but they've teamed up to achieve a thing together) and go from strangers to very close friends as the story goes on; the rest of the cast is variously their friends, allies, enemies, etc. they have a big adventure together that is sometimes fun, often action-packed and tense, often funny, and sometimes not so much sad as melancholic and thoughtful. there is some sad stuff in many characters' backstories, though
- gintama - similar situation regarding there being a core group (in this case, adult guy and two teenage kids) who go from strangers to very close friends; rest of the cast is mostly their allies and friends but also some enemies. it's a shonen series that started in the 2000s and you can tell (there is some questionable language [iirc the official translation uses the r word a couple times, for instance] and some cringeworthy sexual humour aimed at teenage boys) but it's otherwise a very solid comedy manga with a surprising amount of serious (and sad, sometimes) moments that actually get enough space to breathe to feel impactful
- fruits basket - this is a shoujo manga so it's a whole different kind of emotional but i did enjoy everyone's friendships a lot and i did cry like a baby a few times so there's that
- a lot of rpgs would probably count for this; dragon age (especially 2 and veilguard), persona 5, final fantasy 13 come to mind as examples i've enjoyed myself
