Say you are playing against a character from a canon with a culture such that gender/pronouns are not generally assumed by a person's appearance but from a digital identifier attached to their person that they can choose to share or conceal. When this character tags yours, would you prefer that the tag:

a) Reflect the character's canonical understanding of gender, AKA, the narration will refer to your character with the ambiguous they/them until the character is informed otherwise.

or

b) Handwave away any ambiguity and simply refer to your character with the correct pronouns/gender.

or

c) Do something else (feel free to elaborate).

On one hand, I want to keep things IC for my character, but I also know gender can be a sensitive topic and don't want to make any of my thread partners feel uncomfortable if my tags are misgendering their character, even if just to reflect the world-building of my character's canon.

A as far as the character's actual understanding goes, so B or A in introspection/brackets/whathaveyou depending on how the other person prefers to write, I guess ("X looks at Y. He regards him from head to toe and thinks that they're very handsome;" 'he' in question is gendered to me, the writer, but not the character's own cognition, if that makes sense).

I don't think I'd really care either way and the only thing that would actually matter is what's being said directly, at which point my character can correct yours if need be.

You can probably put a mention of this in your info/permissions post.

That said, I probably wouldn't notice if you used they/them the whole time, honestly. It’s such a normal part of speech it’s fly under my radar.

in dwrp we have a very particular style of narration where is half character thoughts half outsider narrator. the first anon used a wonderful example of how one sentence have both. because of this i think both a and b are fine and you should use whichever you like best.

i'd use the character's name without gender-specific pronouns until such a time that my character is explicitly informed of how the other character identifies. like you, i really don't want to start any potential misunderstandings about whether i the player am misgendering or my character is, and i can't invoke knowledge my character doesn't have in their prose — so XXXX's name it is. if i play a character who would willingly or accidentally chronically misgender a character even once informed, i make sure to pm the other player about it.

it's just one of those things where the aggression can ring very close to the day-to-day experiences of a lot of people in the hobby, and i don't want to perpetuate any callbacks to that kind of hostility.

Where is the line between harmless venting and behavior that needs to be reported to a moderator?

A plurk friend of mine was planning to TDM a specific character somewhere but someone else beat them to it. My friend got frustrated and vented about it, which is fine in my opinion. They said that they thought the other player was rude for posting to the TDM when my friend had posted to the EMP first, which I found strange but also not terrible.

But they haven't let this go. They keep chiming in to other plurks about this game about how they're not sure who to app now and getting snappy when someone suggests an alternative. And they haven't asked anyone to not tag the other player yet but they keep making public comments about how it sucks to see their own friends and people who responded to their EMP tagging the other person.

We're not close enough that I feel comfortable talking to them about their behavior directly, so going to the mods feels like the better option. But I'm not sure if the mods would be worried about something like this or if I'd just be causing a fuss for no reason.

i’ve been around since the lj days but the past 5ish years i haven’t really been paying attention to dwrp due to real life taking priority. i’ve been wanting to get back into it, although i’ve decided not to app in games because i don’t want to commit to any monthly AC, no matter how lax they are. so that leaves me with memes and psls, but tbh bakerstreet and fortanon are pretty sparse compared to how i remember them. and then the few characters that do post top levels don’t really appeal to me, so i’m wondering where do people go for casual rp now?

i know this gets asked every so often but i lost the last answer so:

how does one set up a journal to only display a navigation entry without anything else? i've seen journals where it looks embedded and not at all like a journal post, ie no icon, no timestamp, no entry navigation, just the post content itself.

So I'm kind of new here, as in never rped in a public dw setting before. I'm familiar with the site itself and have known friends who have dipped in and out of dwrp, so I'm somewhat familiar with the basic culture. (Not new to writing/rping in general, to be clear.)

But I've recently gotten very into a canon and would love to try my hand at playing one or more characters! It's all a bit overwhelming thoughーare there any games that would be a good fit for a newbie? Or should I try my hand at bakerstreet? I don't really have a friend group to psl with, so I don't think that's a viable option.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks, anons.

Bob has cr with Alice and Carol, who have started a relationship they're still trying to figure out. Their castmate Donna apps in and Bob spills the beans about Alice and Carol's relationship before either of them can bring it up to Donna themselves.

I'm trying to get into DW rp but is there any point if I don't want to do smut? A lot of games are sex games and the sex posts on bakerstreet get a ton more interaction. and that's fine! just not my thing. are there really enough people willing to write without smut to make it worth it?

i don't interact with the broader DWRP community very much so i'm just curious, are games less and less popular nowadays or is that just my impression? it seems people have shifted significantly to PSLs

Can I get some advice on how to deal with feeling bad when your close friends play with other versions of your character? Is it okay to tell the other person you're upset if you know they're trying to hide it from you?

Or failing that, how to frame it to my therapist without having to explain RP? (That still helps her understand its not something serious like cheating.)

have you ever apped to a game where you know literally no one there? not even an acquaintance or "hey, i've seen your username before." i am looking at a game and wondering how, in a community this small, there are groups of people i've never even heard of.

Genuine question, why does it seem like horror dwrp games can't survive these days? Either they don't take off or have very little apps or they fail a few months in. What is it about horror games that dwrp can't sustain?

I'd love a big horror game like Deerington that survives. Or something that actually works long-term like The City. If I missed a horror game out there that it thriving let me know.

Hello, I'm a new player who has a question about shipping perms and such.

If you say that you only want to ship or smut one type of pairing (like F/F or M/M), are people generally...fine with that? Like, most of my muses are bisexual women, but I just prefer writing F/F only because I like it, and I don't want to make anyone think I'm disregarding a canon sexuality when it's just my own writing preference.

Sorry if this is a really stupid question. I just don't want to step on toes here.

What are some red flags that a player is approaching a game like their character is The Special One? How much leeway should be given when the character is established as gifted or powerful in canon?

sorry if this is a weird request, but i'm newish to dwrp and don't have any friends here i could ask, so i turn to kind anons: would someone be willing to look over my icons for me and tell me if they're okay? not like detailed critique or anything, just like, are they not oversharpened, are the colors ok, that kinda stuff -- like the rp equivalent of looking over your friend's outfit before you leave to make sure they don't have a tag sticking out of their jacket. i would especially love someone who plays from animanga canons or plays with characters from animanga a lot, cause that's what my icons are. reply if you're down and i'll pm you there in a bit? thanks in advance!!
